Who was the 17-year-old dressed in an emerald green saree who played a vital part in the inauguration of the Ministry of the 105th Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Portal Welby at Canterbury Cathedral in the UK on March 21? As part of the traditional ceremony, she responded to the three knocks with his staff on the west door of the Cathedral with three questions.

First she said, “We greet you in the name of Christ – who are you and why do you request entry?” She then went on to ask him “Why have you been sent to us?” and after he answered she said “How do you come among us and with what confidence?”
After his final answer she said “Let us then humble ourselves before God and together seek His mercy.”

Evangeline Kanagasooriam was the young girl who had the honour of welcoming the new Archbishop of Canterbury, head of the worldwide Anglican Church. A music and academic scholar at King’s School Canterbury, she has been a part of the Canterbury fellowship along with her brothers Jonathan and James. She has in the past been in the National Children’s Orchestra of Great Britain and is a triple Grade 8 (all ABRSM) in Voice, Piano and Harp. She is also a violinist.

For the ceremony, Evangeline wore a striking green saree that was hand-painted by her great grand aunt – Iswaree Richards. She is the great-grand neice of Rev. Dr. D.T Niles and is related to Rev. John Hensman and several other Sri Lankan Anglican priests.
