The National Cross Country Championships, which is organized and conducted by the Ministry of Sports, will be worked off today at the Mahinda Rajapaksa International Stadium in Homagama.
A total of 90 men and 54 women representing the nine provinces will be vying for bragging rights, challenge trophies and a sum of Rs. 230,000.
The men’s race will cover a distance of over 10,000 metres (six rounds) while the women’s race will cover a distance of nearly 7500 metres (four rounds).
The meet will be conducted in two categories, namely the team event and the individual championships, where the winner will receive a cash award of Rs. 25,000 and the runner up Rs. 20,000.
In addition, those who finish in third place will receive a cash award of Rs. 15,000, while competitors who finish within the top thirteen will also receive cash awards.
The Minister of Sports, Mahindananda Aluthgamage, will be the chief guest for the final and will distribute the awards.
