The four-year childless drought of Dilini Rasangika (29) and her husband Sheelantha Wijepala (34) ended last week (October 14) when Dilini gave birth not to a single child but five little ones – three boys and two girls – who were delivered at the Kandy Teaching Hospital.

Unfortunately despite the best efforts of the doctors, one boy, who weighed a mere 530 grams, did not survive.
Consultant gynecologist Dr. Kapila Gunewardena delivered the babies via a Caesarian section.

Dilini’s water bag broke during the 30th week of her pregnancy, but Dr. Gunawardena insisted she wait until she experienced labour pains.

From then on Dilini remained in the maternity ward of the hospital and was monitored constantly.
The surviving babies – all under 1 kg – are still at the Intensive Care Unit for premature babies of the hospital.
Sheelantha Wijepala – a member of the Kegalle Pradeshiya Sabha and an employee of a telecom provider, told the Sunday Times he and his wife was worried about the delayed pregnancy and had met several fertility experts, and gynecologists in their desperation to have a child .

“My wife was so determined to have a baby as she loves children. After one and a half months we were told that she was pregnant with quintuplets. We were overjoyed but I was worried about her,” he said.

We travelled around the country for years, he said “but now with four children, travelling is the last thing in our minds. For many years it was tears for shattered hopes, but now our tears are tears of joy.”

On an earlier occasion the wife of a Presidential Security Division officer from Embilmeegama also delivered quintuplets. When the Sunday Times contacted the family members they said that following media publicity given to the birth, many private companies cashed in on the opportunity to garner free publicity by promising to help the babies. The companies have forgotten their promises, they said.
