New Additional Sec. to Justice Ministry

Lakshmi Gunasekera, Secretary to the Law Commission of Sri Lanka has been promoted as an Additional Secretary (Legal) of the Ministry of Justice, recently.

She is a past pupil of Visakha Vidyalaya, Colombo. In 1979 she took oaths as an Attorney at Law and in the same year joined the Law Commission as an Assistant Secretary. In 1992 she was promoted to the post of Secretary, Law Commission and was also the Head of Department of the Law Commission Department.

She obtained the Post Graduate Diploma in International Law from the University of Nottingham, UK and Master of Laws (LLM) Degree in Public Law from the University of Colombo. She is also a Solicitor in the UK.

During her tenure at the Law Commission she has represented the legal fraternity at numerous international, conferences.

She also functioned as the Director Research of the Law Commission and since assuming duties was engaged, among diverse other research projects, especially in research on amendments  to the Civil Procedure Code, laws relating to Women and Children, legislation  on Animal Welfare and legislation  on Mental Health and had served as the Secretary of the Delimitation of Judicial Areas Committee appointed by the then Minister of Justice in 1992.

She also served as a Committee member of the Sri Lanka–Swedish Police Project which drew up the road map for the improvement of the Sri Lanka Police service.
