Strong Kingswood overpower DSS

By Aubrey Kuruppu

It took a long time for Kingswood to play their running rugby. When they did, they overpowered a fighting DS Senanayake team by 52 points to 14, 6 goals, 2 tries as against DS’s 2 goals.

To be honest, DS didn’t lie down and die. They fought it out hard in the loose, but were clearly not in the same street. Skipper Urvin Ariyaratne (2), Dinushan Ariyapala (3) Arena Perera (2), Chatura Piyasena (1) scored the tries while Asela Wijesinghe converted six of the efforts.

For DS, Lakshan Visvajith scored twice and put over the conversions. At the breather, the winners had taken a comfortable 26-7 lead. One of the DS’s tries came after a player booted the ball over the line and then touched down.It was unfortunate that one of the DS officials made an obscene gesture when asked the names of the scorers. If the staff members behave in that manner, you can’t blame the players who played a decent game. They were up against severe odds it is true. But is it too much to ask for gentlemanliness from a team official? Defeat stings.

Referee – D. Nimal.
Kingswood won the Under 16 game 28-0.
