STAT DAY 2012 – Statistics for Innovation & Business Improvement

It is with great pleasure that the Stat Circle of the University of Colombo announces its annual event, STAT DAY, which will be held on 28th of June 2012 at the Professor V.K. Samaranayake Auditorium, University of Colombo.

The ‘Stat Circle’ is a student society dedicated to promoting statistical activities within the University. The primary objective of the Stat Circle is to enhance the statistical knowledge of the students and the outer community and, to communicate and exchange ideas with other societies, universities and the industry. Since its inauguration in 2002, the Stat Circle has grown by leaps and bounds through the tireless efforts of its members. Today, it is recognized as one of the most active and dynamic societies in the University of Colombo.

Whilst the main objective of the Stat Circle is to raise student awareness regarding various facets of Statistics, it also actively contributes towards the completion of various projects undertaken by the Department of Statistics of the University of Colombo, to provide an array of services to clients both within and external to the University. In addition the Stat Circle also takes the initiative to organize various lectures and seminars, with the motive of furthering the knowledge of students on the newest trends in statistics.

Stat Day, the highlight of the annual calendar of the Stat Circle, aims to stimulate interest in statistics and other related fields among students, the academia and the industry by providing a forum for presenting and discussing various issues related to statistics. Being a joint effort of the Stat Circle and the staff of the Department of Statistics, the Stat Day provides the much needed platform to discuss and explore new horizons of statistics and related applications. Moreover, this provides a good opportunity for the students to repose with the industry, as an aid in their quest for seeking training placements and job opportunities in the future.

Scheduled to be held for the tenth consecutive time, “Stat Day 2012” promises to be a phenomenal experience to students, academics and professionals with its appealing and timely theme of “Statistics for Innovation & Business Improvement”.

The Day’s Events
The day’s events comprise Guest Speeches and a Panel Discussion followed by the Prof. V. K. Samaranayake Memorial Quiz Competition, where teams from several Sri Lankan universities, compete for the prestigious Prof. V. K. Samaranayake Memorial Trophy.

Guest Speeches and the Panel Discussion

The stat day commences with a selected group of renowned professionals and academics from the state sector and industrial communities of Sri Lanka addressing the gathering. The keynote speech is to be delivered by Mr. Frank Munro, Chief Actuary, AVIVA NDB Insurance PLC on this year’s theme which is, “Statistics for Innovation & Business Improvement”. Two guest speeches will be delivered by Mr. Tony Weerasinghe, CEO, Millenium IT and Mr. Reeza Zarook, CEO, Anything.lk

The Guest Speeches will be followed by the Panel Discussion, an interactive forum, where academics, industry leaders, policy makers, students and a diverse array of experts on different disciplines join in to share and refine their ideas, views & thoughts on the theme. Prof. V. K. Samaranayake Memorial Trophy

A number of teams comprising of the crème de la crème of students from Universities around the country are expected to compete for the prestigious Prof. V.K. Samaranayake Memorial Trophy in memory of Prof. V.K. Samaranayke, the pioneer of statistics at the University of Colombo. The quiz competition is based on fundamental statistical theories and their applications.

Student Session

A brief presentation followed by the distribution of a special booklet including details on Final Year projects undertaken by the undergraduates will be presented to the audience. The presentation consists of a video featuring the current positions of the past graduates of the Department of Statistics. This is an opportunity for graduates to share their knowledge and experiences in practical applications of statistics in the industry with the objective of highlighting the value of the knowledge gained through the education obtained at the Department.All in all, the Stat Circle is confident that Stat Day 2012 will be an attractive and thought stimulating experience for all.
