The Bata-the Sunday Times Most Popular Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year 2012 competition

Only 12 days remain for readers to cast votes on their favourite schoolboy cricketer as the Bata-the Sunday Times Most Popular Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year 2012 competition will close on May 24.
However the main category, which is the All-Island competition, is still led by Thurstan skipper Sajeewa Salgado who is well ahead of others in the race. In the concluded week, Salgado received the highest number of votes which was 754. Salgado’s overall tally stands as 18920 while his closest rival Angelo Jayasinghe of Maris Stella reached the 10,000 mark this week. Jayasinghe had 596 votes in favour last week which enabled him to reach 10,592 votes overall.

All contenders in the All-Island category remain unchanged with Shiran Anuruddhika, the all-rounder from De Mazenod, Royal Panadura team mates, Charith Ruchiranga and Madhawa Fernando, Zahira’s Lakshan Edirisinghe, Kavindu Ashan of Royal Panadura, St. Joseph’s Dishan Dissanayake, St. Peter’s Thanusha Jayawardane, and S. Thomas’ skipper Sachin Peiris trailing one after another respectively.

Very little advances occurred in the Emerging Schools category with the Sasindu Perera, of St. John’s Panadura still remaining on top. Tharindu Guruge of President’s College Kotte and Mohamed Shilmi of St. Anthony’s Boys School Panadura hang on at second and third places respectively.

The competition’s highest number of votes has been recorded by Lakshan Kodagoda of Gateway who virtually has sealed his mark in the International Schools’ category with an overall tally of 33616 votes. Nishan Perera of Lyceum Nugegoda reached 20332 votes. Amjad Ifthikar of Leighton Park has been on the rise during the past couple of weeks.
