62nd Battle of the Gold’s

By M. Shamil Amit

The 62nd Battle of the Gold’s between St. Sebastian’s and Prince of Wales concluded at De Zoysa Stadium in Moratuwa yesterday was destined to end in a draw when play stopped for lunch on day two and it happened exactly that way.

The 80 scored by Anuk Fernando was the only entertainment that the crowd was able to witness. The knock also went a long way as it pulled the Sebs out of the woods when they were struggling on 104 for 6.

Anuk’s knock which came off 155 balls comprised five boundaries and a six and he was involved to valuable partnerships for the seventh and eight wickets.

With Nishamal Fernando he was associated in a 67-run stand and followed with a 72-run partnership for the eighth wicket with Sachintha Fonseka who was the next top scorer who made 37 helping the Sebs, resuming from their overnight score, going on to make 252 for 8 after which they declared at the lunch with the aim of going for a positive result.

However it was never going to happen as Prince of Wales batting the second time with a deficit of 91 runs preferred to go on the defense and the game ended in a drab draw.
