Destination Brunel – Where your journey begins!

After touching down at London’s international Heathrow Airport, a 15 minute taxi ride gets you to one of the city’s few campus-based universities, Brunel. Nestled in the lush green grounds of Uxbridge, West London, this globally renowned University offers high quality teaching, ground-breaking research, and a modern campus that has recently benefited from a £300 redevelopment.

Upon arrival, students are introduced to Brunel University’s fantastic facilities, which include advanced e-learning systems, modern study areas and computer labs, a 24-hour library, and world-class sports facilities that are fit for professional athletes – highlighted by Brunel’s appointment to be an official pre-training host for the London 2012 Olympics.

Established in 1966, Brunel offers both tradition and modernity. Its mission has always been to combine academic rigour with the practical, entrepreneurial and imaginative approach pioneered by its namesake, Isambard Kingdom Brunel. Over the years, the University has also developed extensive and rewarding links with industry, commerce and other providers of education.

Aside from having one of the best Engineering and Design Schools in the UK, Brunel also offers courses across a wide range of subject areas including business and management, computing and maths, education, social sciences (including law, economics), humanities, visual and performing arts, sport sciences, environment, health and social care.

Some of the most popular courses undertaken by Sri Lankan students at Brunel include MSc’s in Corportate Brand Management, International Business, and Marketing. Many also apply to do undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Biomedical Sciences, and Engineering, including Electronic and Electrical, Mechanical, and Aviation Engineering (with Pilot Studies).

Brunel places great importance on its students’ experience throughout their time at the University. With over 15,000 students - including an international student contingent of some 2,500, originating from more than 110 countries – Brunel understands the need to make both their educational and personal journey as worthwhile as possible. And in 2011, the National Student Survey (NSS) rated Brunel 5th in London for overall student satisfaction.

Most students say that the best way to experience student life is to live on campus, and the University accommodation is guaranteed to international students in their first year. Students enjoy modern, en-suite Halls of Residences; free internet access; and an array of on-campus services such as a supermarket, pharmacy, multi-faith centre, bank and several food outlets including a refectory and coffee shop. Friendly student mentors are also around to help students settle in as soon as they arrive.
A current Sri Lankan student who is completing his PhD in Management said:

“Having been here for some time, it’s the people (staff and students) and the campus environment which make Brunel really stand out from other universities!”

The Brunel campus has a lively and friendly atmosphere and there is plenty for students to do outside of their studies.  With its convenient location to London, students enjoy all that London has to offer including its famous landmarks i.e. Big Ben and The Houses of Parliament, world-class theatre, cutting-edge music and restaurants to suit all tastes. Brunel’s International department also offers a comprehensive range of day trips e.g. to Oxford, Cambridge and Windsor Castle and to mainland Europe.

A Masters student from Colombo added:
“I made lots of friends living on campus and learned different things from different cultures – something which I think you cannot learn anywhere else.”
So, if you are looking for a world-class education and experiential journey to remember, don’t delay, make Brunel your University destination today!

You can meet with Brunel University representatives at the forthcoming British Council fair in Colombo, on Friday, 9th; Saturday, 10th and Sunday, 11th March 2012, from 11am – 5pm.
