Kids' World

My new class
By Thisura Perera (Grade 3), Defence Services College, Colombo 2

Oh yes, my new class is Grade 3E. It is coloured in orange colour and all the desks, chairs, curtains are in orange colour and our books are covered in orange colour varnish paper too, because orange is our class colour.

Other classes are coloured in pink, blue, green, yellow and purple but I think my class colour is very nice and bright. So when I step into the class it is like an orange coloured world.

Our class teacher is Ms. Pavithra. She is very smart in her Kandyan saree and she teaches us well. In my class I have my own ambitions too. This year also I will do my best in my studies and obey the class teacher and my parents. In my new 3E class, and inside the class, it is like an orange flower
garden. So I feel like a butterfly in it.

My trip to Sigiriya

By Khalid Awad (Grade 5), Belvoir College Int.

We went to Sigiriya on a Saturday morning. We stopped for breakfast at Ambepussa and we reached the Elephant Corridor Hotel around 11.30 a.m. After lunch we had a swim.

There was a stunning view of the Kandalama Lake and its hills. Next I had a dip in the jacuzzi in our room. Then we climbed Sigiriya rock.

We saw many caves and also the Lion’s paws. After that we went to see around the rock. There were many foreigners and tourists. It was an amazing scene.

After we came down, we went to the museum. There were ancient engravings, jewelry and many other things. After that we proceeded to Hotel Sigiriya. From there we went on a safari to Hurulu Eco Park, Habarana. We saw hundreds of elephants.

We got back around 7 p.m. After an early dinner we watched a movie and relaxed. The next morning we strolled around the hotel after breakfast. It was a tiring journey back home but we enjoyed our trip very much.

A visit to the Elephant Orphanage

By Kehan Amaratunge (10 years), American Int. School, Dehiwala

On December 23, my parents, aunt, a cousin and I went to the elephant orphanage at Pinnawala by van. It was a comfortable trip.

We left Matale in the morning and arrived at Pinnawala around 11.30 a.m. We went near the river and saw many elephants bathing. They were all muddy. Some baby elephants were rubbing themselves against the rocks and some others were enjoying dipping in the water along the huge elephants.

There were a few baby elephants running around like little children. It was a delightful sight.

We had lunch at Pinnawala Hotel and the food was tasty. We saw many souvenir shops selling art and craft items. One shop sold recycled paper made of elephant dung.

Afterwards we rode on an elephant called Komali who was blind in one eye. We fed the elephant with bananas and touched its trunk. When I was riding, I felt its ears touching my feet. I enjoyed the elephant ride.

We returned to Matale in the evening tired but happy. I was muddy too and needed a good scrub and a wash. It was a fascinating trip and I know that I will always remember the things I saw that day.
Oh and the baby elephants, the naughty ones, they are just like us, always up to mischief.
