SriLankan Airlines’ food at Dutch Hospital complex

By Sunimalee Dias

The old Dutch Hospital continues to draw attention with the newly opened SriLankan Airlines’ “Semondu” restaurant operated by SriLankan Catering. The mood is perfect for a quite lunch or dinner in the heart of the city of Colombo that opened last month that allows seating 64 at any one time with a staff of 30 and the ability to enjoy a meal in the courtyard as well.

SriLankan Catering CEO Sarath Fernando speaking to the media said that they bring down the food from Katunayake and serve Asian and Continental on the menu. He noted that the restaurant gives opportunities for its staff to cross train and also allows them to be able to encourage travellers to visit the restaurant.

However, the airline is yet to market this restaurant with its travellers onboard the national carrier, Mr. Fernando said. While ownership is with the Urban Development Authority (UDA) the national carrier had been invited to open a restaurant following which the airline took up this opportunity to showcase its culinary delights to the public at large at the latest shopping address in town.

The food is a blend of flavours that mix and match the Asian and European cuisine, with an oriental touch for customers during lunch time from 12.00pm – 2.30pm and dinner from 7.00pm – 11.00pm.
The kitchen is open for all to see the chefs in action preparing the best of the culinary delights on the menu to serve their customers.

Further, at the centre of the restaurant is laid out a set of lights changing colours on the floor creating a retro effect to set the mood and which can be used to provide a relevant theme if required as well, Mr. Fernando said.

A journey back in time is well-provided for the discerning traveller who can take a peak into the past giving a sense of what is truly Sri Lankan through a number of images displayed on the wall.
The uniqueness of the place lies in its past that is brought to life through the thick beams on the roof and the pillars that make up the ambience, taking you back in time.
