Zahira and Sri Sangamitta annex titles

Matale District U-15 Hockey C’ships

Zahira College Matale and Sri Sangamitta Girl’s School excelled to annex the boy’s and girl’s titles respectively in the Matale District Schools Under-15 Hockey Tournament 2011 played at the Astro Turf in Matale last weekend.

In the boy’s final Zahira beat St. Thomas Matale by three goals to one. Centre forward Mohamed Usman netted his first goal in the eighth minute of play to lead by 1-0 at lemons. After the change of ends Usman and Abdul Rehman added two more goals in favour of Zahira while the only goal for St. Thomas came off the stick of A.R.B. Dissanayake shortly before the final whistle. C.N. Cramer and Ajith Manjula controlled the final. Zahira beat Vijaya, Matale 1-0 and St. Thomas beat Christ Church 7-6 on penalties in the semi-finals. Six boy’s teams from St. Thomas, Vijaya, Christ Church, Zahira, Sirimavo Bandaranaike Model School and Ellawela M.V. participated.

Displaying excellent form Sri Sangamitta Girl’s School stickers trounced Sirimavo Bandaranaike Model Girl’s School by 7 goals to nil in the final to annex the title. Centre forward Sandaruwani Jayaratne stole the show by slamming four goals including a hat-trick in the second half and she was supported by left extreme Vinodya Lakshani who netted two goals and right inside Sachithra Ratnasiri who scored once. I. Wilwaraarachchi and Ajith Manjula controlled the final. Four girl’s teams from Vijaya, Christ Church, Sirimavo Bandaranaike Model and Sri Sangamitta participated in the tournament conducted by the Matale Schools Hockey Committee.
