Retroactive–a new platform for budding musicians

A new musical initiative hopes to bring fresh opportunities to artists in Sri Lanka, as the first ‘Retroactive’ event opens at The Warehouse Project in Maradana on Saturday, November 26.
The Warehouse Project, a local community outreach programme, has joined forces with M Entertainment to provide a platform for musicians to cover classic songs from the 70s and 80s on the last Saturday of every month.

Kirby de Lanerolle

Kirby de Lanerolle, founder of The Warehouse Project said: “In Sri Lanka much of our popular music has been imported from the UK or the US, but what Retroactive hopes to showcase is the wealth of talent we have right here on our doorsteps. There is a growing number of young, creative individuals living in Colombo and the surrounding areas that we believe have the potential to compete on the world’s stage and should be given access to the resources they need to do so.”

A spokesperson for M Entertainment said: “We are very excited about Retroactive as it will provide a platform for some of the country’s freshest and undiscovered talent. Our music industry has an abundance of Sinhalese music, so we see this as an ideal time to groom new English-speaking talent, not only to diversify the music produced on our island, but to allow our artists to compete with other musical idols worldwide.”

To encourage younger audience members early on, the late-afternoon event will also include a variety of activities for all the family to enjoy including balloon games, face-painting and a bouncy castle.
De Lanerolle continues: “We’re very excited about the launch, in due course we hope to introduce workshops at the event to encourage youngsters in the community to learn to play instruments and make their own music. It is my dream to one day see one of those kids take the stage and earn a record contract.”

Resident Warehouse Project band, WOW, will be playing host to the event every month. The band will be releasing their debut single ‘Kaiwaruwa’ that raises awareness of the importance of volunteering to coincide with IYV+10, the 10th anniversary of International Volunteer Day on December 5 this year.
Retroactive will take place at The Warehouse Project, Block #26 Tripoli Road, Colombo 10 from 4p.m. - 9.p.m. Tickets are priced Rs. 500. For more information, please visit www.facebook.com/warehouseproject or contact Mel on +94 779 158442 / mel@warehouseproject.lk
