Put on your dancing shoes

By Shaveen Jeewendra

To be nimble-footed is something we all secretly long for, while some take dance as a sport, some do it for the passion, some to impress and some for a living. Although to be master at it, and to perform at the next level doesn’t come without hard work, determination and the right guidance. He who walks, can dance to save his wits, but it’s take a whole lot more to perform a dance. In this wake, the Artistic Danceworld, which has been in existence for the last 16 years, is presenting it’s ‘2nd Artistic Dance-Sport Championship’, which is described as an International and Ballroom Dance Competition.

The previous year’s winners

The Dance-Sport championship will be a common arena for talented dancers to showcase their talents. From Latin dancing to Salsa, and from Samba to Rumba, all dance forms will be showcased at this extravagant dance night. “This will be an international event with competitors as well as judges from other nations”, states Maheen Ranasinghe, Director at Artistic Danceworld. “Last year’s competition was an immense success and hopefully this year, we will beat our usually high standards”, he adds. The competition will be conducted under several categories spanning from Freshers, Pre-novice, Novice, Amateur rising star to Amateur, with standard and Latin dance styles incorporated into the categories. Dancers from the Artistic Danceworld as well as other dancing schools will take part in this competition. Valuable prizes and the title of the ‘Best dancing troupe’ is offered on show.

“We believe that there is immense potential to uplift dancing as a sport in Sri Lanka, but there is a lack of recognition of styles such as Ballroom”, Maheen elaborates. With the initiation of the Artistic Dancesport competition, the horizons are open to promote such styles, that would otherwise have been timidly restricted to a couple’s first dance. Maheen is closely aided by his wife Amali in their endeavors, as the both of them are qualified professional dance instructors. The Artistic Danceworld academy conducts classes in Ballroom, Latin American and Ballet dancing. It organizes several annual events to expose their students to the performance stage. Annual exam sessions are held, which are incorporated to the National Association of Teachers of Dancing (NATD) in the UK. In addition, there are many in-house concerts that are organized by this dynamic dance duo.

The 2nd International Latin and Ballroom Dance Competition will feature some of Asia’s best dancing troupes ready to battle it out on the dancefloor with some of Sri Lanka’s talented dancers. The visiting International adjudicators are Mr. William Lor (Malaysia) , Mr.Boon Wah Siow (Malaysia) and acclaimed professionals from Singapore. The show will offer a range of Latin, Ballroom, Salsa, Rumba, Chacha, Samba, and the very interesting Pasedoble dancing styles.

Maheen hopes to indulge the audiences to an evening of extravagance, and a night of fun to follow. A DJ Night has been planned to follow the dance evening, and it promises to offer a frolicking good time. The ‘2nd International Latin and Ballroom Dance Competition will be held on the 20th November, at the British School Auditorium. For more details please contact - 0112-867020 / 0726-887366
