Inter Act introduces ‘Dance Theatre’

Inter Act Art Black Box theatre presents yet another novel experience of performing art- ‘dance theatre’, a mixture of choregraphy and drama.

M. Safeer

Two experimental dance theatre items titled ‘Caged’ directed by M. Safeer and ‘Barrel Resembles Life…Sometimes’ directed by Aruna Priyantha, Nadeeka Tharangani and S. Dayalan will be performed at 3.30 pm and 7 pm on November 8 at the British School in Colombo.

‘Caged’ is an experimental modern theatre art act while ‘Barrel Resembles Life…Sometimes’ is a model which discusses certain social situations in different dimensions using barrels and body movements. Both creations are designed to be performed in a limited blackbox theatre, a new theatre experince introduced by Inter Act Art, but it is flexible as anytime they could be modified to suit the mostly available proscenium theatre.

The two dance theatre experinces are also to represent Sri Lanka at the forthcoming Kathmandu International Theatre Festival.

“Dance theatre is one the latest medium of art created by combining theatre and dance and this include both acting and dancing. This is the most suitable international theatre language,” says playwrite, M. Safeer.

“As theatre persons our challenge is to create an internatoinal language and the ‘body’ is the theatre language and in an multi-ethnic and multi-language country like ours this medium could be used best to build beautiful bridges,” says Safeer who is also the executive of Inter Act Art.

Meanwhile Inter Act Art also has called for applications to work for permanent group theatre workshops which are scheduled to be conducted by foreign theatre experts simultanious to the first ever internatioanl theatre festival scheduled from March 26 to April 2, 2012 in Colombo. The workshop on ‘Internatioanl Modern theatre and Modern Black Box style’ conducted by M. Safeer and those interested could apply by sending an application before November 7 to the address Coordinator, Inter Act Art, 133/48 D, Nanayakkara Mawatha, Obeysekerapura, Rajagiriya or email interactartsl@gmail.com.
