The elephant

By Tharusha Mendis (Grade 6), Prince of Wales College, Moratuwa

The elephant is a mammal. The male is called a bull, the female a cow and the baby is called a calf. It eats fruits, leaves and yams.

Elephants help us to carry heavy logs, clear forests and long ago our kings used elephants in wars.
At the Kandy Esala Perahera, the elephants are dressed in beautiful, shining clothes and they walk proudly along the streets. The elephant is the largest land animal. It is the only animal with a trunk and it has long tusks. The tusks are very valuable.

Tourists come to our country especially to see the elephants. There is an elephant orphanage at Pinnawala. We should protect our elephants.

Little Bird

By Januda Perera (6 years), I-Gate College

I saw a wool ball
On a branch of a tree
Hiding its head
In a small leaf in the dusk

Everyday I saw it
A chick with a small beak
Sitting on a branch
Fast asleep

The tree is near my gate
One day my van went into the garage
Frightened little wool ball flew away
It was a little tailor bird

The day I got lost

By Sachin Athukorala (13 years), Royal College

In my life, I have got lost several times. The first day I got lost was at the zoo. That day we first went to see the snakes because they were closing it at 4 o’clock. Then we went to the butterfly house because that was also closing at 4. Then we had our lunch and went to see the elephant circus.

There were lots of people so we couldn’t see the elephants very well. So, I climbed onto a wall and watched the circus.

Suddenly I looked for my parents, but I couldn’t find them. I jumped down from the wall and went to find them. I thought that they were also looking for me and I searched for half an hour but I couldn’t find them.
Suddenly I heard an announcement saying that a child was missing from his family.

I ran and came to the main office and finally found my family there. I apologised to my parents and thanked the officer and we went home.
