Do you aspire to be a high flying Chartered Accountant?
The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Sri Lanka is the right choice

The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Sri Lanka (ICASL) is the country’s national accounting body, which is a globally recognized accountancy organization with over 4200 professional members and 36,000 registered students.

Established in the late 1959 by an Act of Parliament (No. 23 of 1959), the Institute is one of Sri Lanka’s largest professional bodies and was the first professional Accountancy Organization to be incorporated under an Act of Parliament. For over 52 years, ICASL, which is the largest tertiary education establishment in the country outside the university system, has been playing a pivotal role in uplifting the standard of the accounting profession in Sri Lanka while lending a helping hand to thousands of children from rural to urban areas from various parts of the country to succeed in their lifelong goals.

Annually, approximately 9000 students register at the Institute to follow the Chartered Accountancy course. ICASL is the national accounting body responsible for the education of students, professional development of members and service to the business community in auditing, taxation, financial management and business consultancy.

The Chartered Accountancy course
ICASL course structure consists of three levels which primarily covers financial accounting, management, business accounting, taxation, auditing, business English, commercial and corporate law.

Apart from the general study course, the most unique feature of the ICASL qualification is the minimum three-year practical training period that a student has to undergo during his or her course of study, making the chartered accountant not only the most sought after professional in the world but a fully qualified qualification which covers all aspects necessary to deal in today’s competitive business world.
The ICASL course structure comprises the following:

Certificate in Accounting and Business (CAB)
Diploma in Accounting and Business (DAB)
Associate Chartered Accountant (ACA)
Entry requirements

Any student who has passed his or her A/L examination with three simple passes in any stream can follow the ICASL course. Furthermore, age is no barrier to register to follow this course, making way for even the most senior person to be able to follow this prestigious course and enjoy the benefits.
However, students who have fallen short of this requirement can join ICASL’s sister institution, the Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) where they can follow the foundation course and on completion of all required courses at AAT join the ICASL and obtain the ACA qualification.

Practical training
Practical training plays a vital role in building the required skills and competencies of a professional; hence completion of a specified training requirement has become an essential part towards becoming a chartered accountant.

All students at ICASL are required to follow a minimum of a three-year practical training period at prestigious organizations in the country which include the Central Bank of Sri Lanka, state and private banks, accounting bodies and non-accounting bodies. Students also have the opportunity to obtain permanent employment at these establishments once they complete their practical training, depending on their performance.

ICASL Scholarships
The ICASL, as the country’s national accounting body offers a range of scholarships to deserving students on an annual basis. It annually awards 40 scholarships to students who have scored the highest at the Advanced Level examination, while scholarships are also granted to students who face financial difficulties.
Affordability
Today we find many qualifications at extremely high prices but of little recognition. Therefore, what is important for students is to choose a qualification that has both affordability and recognition; which seems very rare. Yet the ICASL qualification enjoys both these factors.
At just a fraction of the cost in contrast to most of its foreign competitors, the ICASL qualification comes at an amazingly affordable price and commands the same recognition that its foreign competitors enjoy today.

The chartered accountancy qualification is much sought after so that students who have completed the entire course or even completed it partially have a range of job opportunities awaiting them both in Sri Lanka and abroad.

Among the most esteemed positions a chartered accountant can enjoy in today’s corporate world are the following:

Central Bank Governor
Chief Executive Officer
Chief Operating Officer
Chief Financial Officer
Finance Director
Company Secretary
Financial Controller
Finance Manager
Group Accountant
Management Accountant
Tax Consultant
Tax Manager
Assistant Finance Director
