The Great Fire of London

By Aqthas Sabri (8 years), Gateway College, Kandy

The Great Fire of London was a tragedy that took place in 1606. It lasted for four days. It all began on Sunday September 2, when a baker in Pudding Lane had forgotten to sweep out his oven.

The raging flames destroyed 400 streets, 13,200 houses and 876 churches. It was a miracle that only nine people died in the fire. Samuel Pepys wrote about it in his diary.

My mother

By Omaya Perera (Grade 1), St. Thomas’ Catholic Int. College, Seeduwa

My mother is pretty and kind. She cooks rice and curry for me. She bathes me and washes me. She tells me stories and helps me to study. My mother loves me and I too love her.

My tour to India

By Kavindi Ranasinghe (14 years), Kegalle B.V.

It was March 18. I got up at about 2 a.m., to get ready to go to Bandaranaike Airport. We reached the airport at about 6.30 a.m., and went to the Sri Lankan Airlines check-in counter.

I was so excited to see the inside of the plane. The airhostesses were beautiful. When we entered the plane, they said “ayubowan”. I am so glad I got a seat near the window. It was amazing. The height was 80,000 feet. After about one hour and 15 minutes we reached Chennai Airport.

First we went to the hotel and had some rest. Then we had some Indian food for lunch and began our
shopping. We walked along the streets. We got into some small shops with sweets and tried sweets like laddu.

I saw a lot of three wheelers all over the road and all yellow coloured. We got into a big shopping plaza with nine upstairs. On the ground floor were thousands of beautiful saris. We shopped there till night.

On the second day we went to ‘Thirupathi’ kovil. On the third day we went to see Anna tower, MGM tower and Marina beach. We went to T. Nagar for shopping and that was the last day of our tour. It was
unforgettable for me.

What makes a leader?

By Madushan (Grade 6), Oxford Int. Collge, Badulla

A leader is made by good qualities, discipline, being kind, good speaking ability and with command in taking decisions. A leader should know how to control his team and speak useful and clear words. The most important thing is all the work he/she is doing, should be meaningful.

A team leader must have the ability of listening. He should be happy to face all the problems. He should be stronger to control a rebellious team. A leader should be firm. If he is too kind, the team will control him. If he is too harsh, the team will reject the leader. A leader should be one of us but more than us.
