Law-Med Cricket Match 2011

The annual Law-Med encounter between the Sri Lanka Law College and the Medical faculty of the University of Colombo started on July 31 and will continue till August 28 2011.

The two institutions were established in the 1870s and are recognized as the oldest and the most prestigious higher educational institutions in the country which has produced professionals in the two vocations of utmost importance to society. This year the budding lawyers and doctors would be battling each other for the 99th time in history.

The encounter had been brought to a halt half a dozen years ago, due to unavoidable reasons. However as a result of the laborious efforts and the cordial discussions between the two unions of students and the support from the heads of the institutions, it was restarted last year and ended up with the medicos being the overall champions, but the lawyers emerging as the cricketing heroes.

This year the Law College celebrates its 100th anniversary (Estd in 1911) of its location in the Hulftsdorp court premises and therefore the budding lawyers are very keen to finish this encounter as the victors.

The annual 50 over cricket match which is scheduled to be held on August 21 2011 (Sunday) at the Colombo University Grounds will be the most exciting and celebrated event of the entire sporting encounter. As the budding lawyers completely outsmarted the medicos last year, they are hoping to repeat the same performance this year too. Just like the bygone year, the Law College consists of a very competitive side that has consistently won the matches and achieved a one hundred per cent success rate for the year 2011.

Very experienced campaigner Vishwajith Munasinghe, an off-spinner and useful middle order batsman, captaining the side is assisted by the left handed batsman Nishan Premathirathne as the vice Captain.
Law College very keenly keeps an eye on last year's captain and the player of the match, the all-rounder Buddika Rajapakse who will lift their hopes for a comprehensive win. Very stylish right handed batsman Chithral Fernando, the promising left handed wicket-keeper batsman Vishwa Weerawardane, opener Sushan Peiris, veteran Vasantha Herath and all-rounders in the form of Gaurawa Liyanage, Pathum Bandara, Chameera Haputantri, Nihara Sandaruwan, Ashantha Fernando, Vishwa Perera, Asela Rupasinghe Thasitha Gunasekara and Thusitha Ranasinghe will add more strength to the side. Sudantha Bandara and Nalaka Samarakoon are specialist pace bowlers in the outfit.
