By Sanath Weerasuriya, Pix By Nilan Maligaspe

I am sure anybody will recognize this icon? Hammer and Sickle, the famous revolutionary symbol of the Marxists and a man with a huge Cuban Cigar. This is the infamous Che Guevara, an Argentine Marxist revolutionary, physician, author, guerilla leader, a diplomat and military theorist. A major figure in the Cuban Revolution, today, his style and his image has become an unique symbol of rebellion. This will be not the latest Red Revolution in the country, but the latest theme for one of Colombo’s posh restaurants.

Welcome to Cafe Che, the place where rebels would enjoy the revolutionary food. This is one of the 5 restaurants/cafes of the Harpo’s Group. Owned by Dian Gomes, MD of Mass Holdings and Managed by Harpo Gunaratne, a veteran hotelier.

Cafe Che opened its doors in August 2009 in the leafy but bustling suburb of Colombo 6, next door to Gandhara on Stratford Avenue.  Tastefully and evocatively decorated, Café Che is a comfortable and convenient place to eat for families and others.

After a couple of years of operation, Cafe Che has change its menu to suite the modern palettes of new born revolutionaries. The Café Che menu combines the best of Harpo’s Pizza and authentic Italian pastas with an electrifying lineup of Cuban, Mexican and Continental delights created by the Chef.
The Cuban Specials on the menu are Pescado De Habana, Al Mojo De Ajo (Tiger Prawns), Criollo Chicken Gumbo, Cuban Ropa Vieja, Bistec Encebollado and Arroz con Salchicha Viena.

The Che Special dishes at the Café are Beans & Beef Chilli Burrito, Green Chilli & Pork Burrito, Salsa Chicken Burrito, Spicy Chorizo Burrito and Seafood Burrito. Tortilla Chips with Guacamole Dip, Vegetarian Nachos / Tacos, Seafood Nachos / Tacos, Chilli Con Carne with Nachos / Tacos and Chicken Nachos / Tacos are some of the Mexican favourites.

Roast Rack of Lamb, Roast Stuffed Pork Loin with Prunes, Herbed Beef Fillet with Wasabi Cream Sauce and Ginger & Chilli Baked Fish are Grill items in the new menu. Apart from main dishes salads and soups too are changed in the menu. Chef Salad, Caesar Salad, Melon & Feta Salad, Shrimp Pasta Salad, Mexican Chicken Salad, Mexican Seafood Soup, French Onion Soup, Gazpacho Soup, Cream of Chicken and Mushroom Soup, French Onion Soup, Gazpacho Soup and Cream of Chicken andMushroom Soup are some of the popular items on this new menu.

Cafe Che is completely airconditioned and has two private dining rooms for those who wish to host dinner parties the easy way and offers its entire menu through its delivery service (Tel: 486 9000).

Under the Harpo’s Restaurants & Cafes are 5 different F&B concepts- The Bay Leaf which is said to be one of the places to go for Italian, The Commons is a coffee house, The Park Street Mews is a fusion concept, Harpo’s Pizza creating a local branding for pizzas, and last but not least this rebellious Cafe Che. Café Che is located at No. 60, Stratford Avenue, Colombo 6. Tel: 255 3430.
