Sunday Times photographer barred from match

Sorry: No photos of Navy-Havelocks game

Our Sports Photographer Ranjith Perera was turned away from the Navy vs Havelocks rugby game at Havelock Park yesterday. Ranjith says that the personnel from the presidential security division on duty had refused to let him into the grounds stating that the Sunday Times was not on the list provided to them to be allowed into the grounds.

He was thoroughly searched and even a sticker, yellow in colour, was attached to his camera. “Even the lens and the battery were removed from my camera. Later I was told to take a shot with my camera, which I did. My office press card and the press card offered by the Information Department were checked closely and I was told that I cannot be allowed into the grounds by the Media Officer who was summoned to the spot,” said Ranjith.

We apologize to our readers that we are unable to carry pictures of this key rugby encounter due to this intrusion by the security men who were on duty at Havelock Park yesterday.
Havelocks Sports Club were the hosts of this game.
