Cars 2

By Zaid bin Hussain (Grade 3), St. Anthony’s College, Katugastota

Cars 2 came to Sri Lanka in 2011. It’s the same story with Lightning Mcqueen, Mator the tow truck and everybody. But in Cars 2 there are new characters, ships, hero cars (male and female) and also a zip kart. Different powers of the two hero cars protect them.

Powers: Bombs from the wheel, rope from below headlight (male) current wire from the rim,
computer in front between the lights (female). I like the cartoon Cars 2.

Kandy Esala Perahera

By Kalendra Abeysinghe (Grade 4), Trinity College, Kandy

Kandy Esala Perahera is back once again. Opening ceremony of the perahera is on July 30 and from
July 30 onwards until August 3, all the devales will lead a perahera which goes only inside the devales.
On August 4, starts the perahera.

First five days is the kumbal perahera. Kumbal perahera means that it’s not much beautiful because there are no lights on elephants, Basnayake Nilames and the
drummers, dancers will be wearing old clothes.

From August 9 is the Randoli perahera. Randoli perahera is very beautiful with colourful lights on elephants and kavadi dances and the dolava is also carried in this kind of perahera. On August 13 night is the Maha perahera. August 14 is the daval perahera.

They go to the Ganadevi kovil. Then they come near the Gedige Viharaya and start the perahera. This goes along the streets to the Maligawa and goes around the Maligawa and ends the perahera.

There are many kinds of events. They are fireball players, fan dances, lee keli, kadu fights, cane dances, wes dances, hevisi, savaran dances, raban dances, kavadi dance, kohombakala dances (this kind of dance is only done by the girls from Pattini devale) and kasa.

For seven days after the perahera there is a specially arranged ceremony called Vahyaku natuma in the Vishnu devale.

Flora and Fauna

By Shakya Wickramaarachchi (Grade 5), Royal Int. School, Kurunegala

What do you mean by Flora and Fauna? Plants and animals. How are plants important to us? Plants give us oxygen. Human beings breathe in oxygen and breathe out carbon dioxide. But plants take in carbon dioxide and put out oxygen. So human beings give carbon dioxide to plants and plants give oxygen to human beings. It’s called Interdependence between plants and animals.

We have flower gardens at home. We all love flowers. We get food, furniture, medicine, firewood from plants. But some people cut down trees. If we cut down trees we won’t get oxygen. It will be very harmful to us. We won’t get shade, we won’t get food, good environment and water resources will
disappear.

As we are Sri Lankans we should keep our surroundings clean. We should protect trees.
Fauna means animals. As plants, animals are very useful to us. In early days people used animal skins to wear. Now also we use animal skins to wear.

For example we use wool of sheep to stitch woollen clothes. We take milk, eggs, fish, meat from animals. We all love pets and keep them in our homes.

Both fauna and flora are very important to us. As Sri Lankans we should be proud of our country and
protect our Fauna and Flora.

My hobby

By Nufdha Macky (9 years), Kalutara Muslim C.C.

My hobby is bird watching. It is an interesting hobby. There is a big garden next to my house and many birds and insects visit it. Some of the birds that come are sparrows, crows, pigeons and parrots. Butterflies and bees also come.

Most of the birds come here for food, water and shelter. Some of them even build their nests in our garden. As there is a small pond in the garden, lots of birds come to take a bath.

I like to hear the sound of the birds in the morning, while I am getting ready to go to school. Birds are very beautiful to watch and they make our garden and environment beautiful too.
