Two new records established on day one

Sir John Tarbat Athletics Championship

Two new records were set up on the first day of the three day Sir John Tarbat Athletics Championship organized by the Sri Lanka Schools Athletic Association. The event is sponsored by Nestle Lanka Ltd and is being held at the Sugathadasa Stadium.

The two records set were in the Girls Under 18 high jump event in the morning session and the second in the afternoon session was in the Boys Under 20 long jump event. H.M.N. Madushani of Sir John Kotalawala MV Kurunegala had the honour of establishing the first record. Madushani achieved her feat in the Under 18 high jump event where she cleared 1.74 metres eclipsing the record of 1.68 metres she held jointly with two others Lahiruni Peiris and D.D. Ranasinghe both of Devi Balika Colombo.

Apart from that 20 other finals were held during the whole day with ten each in the morning and evening sessions. In the boys category S.M.A.N. Dilshan of Ananda took the first slot in the Under 20 Dicuss Throw with a feat of 39. 19m.

M.H.I. Sandaruwan of Ratnayake MMV Menikhinna took the Under 18 pole vault while Dinal Fernando of St. Sebastian’s Moratuwa took first place in the Under 16 long jump event. The Under 20, 5000m event was won by Y.G.C.N. Wijesinghe of Ratnayake MMV Menikhinna with W.W.M. Madushan of Lunuwatte MMV Welimada taking the 3000m event in the Under 16 category.

In the girls category Indunil Hasika of Sumana Balika Ratnapura was first place in the Under 16 javelin event. H.M.M.K. Seneviratne of Sri Rahula Katugastota took the first slot in 5000m in the Under 20 category.

The 3000m event for girls Under 18 was won by K.D.P. Kumarage of Ambatenna Pushpadana MV Katugastota while Dushanthi Rashmika of Sumana Balika Ratnapura took the shot putt event in the girls Under 20 category.
