From ‘Madol Doowa’ to ‘The Fortress’

By Sanath Weerasuriya

Many years ago Koggala became famous for Martin Wickremasinghe’s all time favourite ‘Madol Doowa’. As kids we did visit ‘Madol Doowa’ on a joyful boat trip and many years later to the Martin Wickremasinghe Museum at his home.

But with the change of era, Koggala became world famous for different things. ‘The Fortress’ is the top attraction of the area and later all eyes turned to Koggala for the ‘World’s Most Expensive Dessert’ offered by this fantastic resort. Who on earth can afford a dessert for US$ 14, 500/- (Approx. Rs. 14,50000/-)?But there are buyers and the Fortress is the place for them.

This five-star property is housed in the powerful fortress style building that features three types of luxury rooms, elegant gardens, outdoor swimming pool, large spa centre, few restaurants and bars, wine cellar, gymnasium, DVD library and meeting rooms.

After coming to the cradle of luxury, I realized why the Fortress became the unique feature in Koggala.
The hotel has everything a traveller needs and once you are inside, there is no outside world in exsistence.

That’s why I believe ‘The Fortress Resort and Spa’ holds the key to happiness and total relaxation in privacy. The resort’s architecture with its high rising walls and ceilings, long corridors that stretch to infinity and minimalist décor has a fluid melding of contemporary and Dutch and Portuguese styles. Embracing this graceful piece of work, is a lengthy luxuriant garden stretch, striking water features and a free flow swimming pool that faces that glorious Indian ocean. The resort’s vast open spaces are comforting. They invite you to indulge in the beauty and serenity of nature.

‘The Fortress Resort and Spa’ with its five decidedly unique and elegant living spaces offers a touch of luxury with a twist of modernity. The property includes 49 fashionable rooms and suites equipped with king sized beds with Egyptian cotton. These stylishly well appointed guest rooms include Fortress Rooms, Ocean Rooms, Beach Rooms, Ocean Lofts and Fortress Residences. These rooms which reflect the epitome of chic living boast of amenities like designer fittings, over sized beds, open plan bathrooms with rainfall shower and bath and other modern facilities that enhance your stay.

The Resort offers many ways of dining to its guests. This includes the Pepper restaurant which features an eclectic menu that combines the best of both Eastern and Western cuisine. Wine3 , is yet another striking feature at the resort, which offers you the experience of dinning in the heart of a glass cave surrounded by a refined selection of wines. The resort also presents the unique concept of destination dinning, inviting guests to savour exquisite meals with an ambiance that heightens the experience by twofold. Guests can choose between relishing their meal with that special someone near the pool, garden or alongside the walls of the resort.

The ‘Miris Malu’ seafood market meanwhile is the resort’s way of showing off their exceptional culinary skills and equally enticing selection of amazing seafood. This experience gets underway every Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday. At the resort there are so many thing you can do. Get onto a hammock and unwind. Mint concoction or take a long cool dip in the pool.

‘Of course, there are plenty more activities that you can do during your stay at the resort, and the obliging staff the resort are sure to give you some pointers on how to make your stay at the resort, an unforgettable affair’ said Dayal Fernando, the Manager of the Hotel.
