Royal Institute of Colombo - Outstanding in Academic Performance

Royal Institute of Colombo (RIC), a market leader in tertiary education, is the Affiliated Centre of the University of London in Sri Lanka. Currently it offers 15 degrees in the areas of Finance, Economics, Accounting, Banking, Business, Information Systems, International Relations, Law, Management, Mathematics and Sociology under the international programmes of the University of London. It also offers Diploma courses in Economics, Law and Social Sciences which are access routes to the degrees.

Today there are over 800 students following the Degree and Diploma courses at the RIC.
A unique feature of our programmes is that the development of the syllabuses, course, material, guidelines and evaluation of answer scripts are done by the academics of the University of London and all examinations are held by the University of London itself. The University closely supervises the delivery of our programmes to ensure that we maintain the same standard. The University Statutes state that candidates granted Degrees and other awards under its international programmes shall have attained the same academic standard irrespective of mode or place of study or examination and that students of the International programmes are examined to the same standard as that required of students enrolled at the constituent colleges of the University of London.

Therefore our students have the dual advantage of obtaining a prestigious and an identical Degree of the University of London here in Sri Lanka at almost one-tenth of the cost of tuition fees alone in studying for the same Degree in Britain. Even for a student who has not completed high school education, the Diplomas offered by RIC provide a very rare opportunity of obtaining a University of London Degree in 3 years.

The demand for the University of London Degree has seen a remarkable growth in Sri Lanka despite the competition from other educational institutions offering degree programmes from various Universities overseas. The growth we believe is because students choose to enrol for a University of London Degree primarily as they wish to gain a quality degree that is internationally recognized and also in consideration of the high quality delivery of the programme by the Royal Institute of Colombo.

Royal Institute of Colombo has consistently produced excellent results by maintaining outstanding class rates and pass rates in the region of between 97% to 100% and some of them achieving "World's Best" results. Over the last 13 years 1350 students have graduated through RIC which has also produced around 600 Diplomates. Most of them are now occupying high profile influential positions. During the last few academic years around 10 students have achieved "Top marks in the World" each year for the units they offered.

During the academic year 2008/2009 two students who performed exceptionally well at the finals have been awarded scholarships by the LSE and are now pursuing Master's studies at the LSE which is a great achievement and a pride to Royal Institute. In the year 2010 RIC produced a 97% pass rate at the degree level. It is proud to state the brilliant performance of one of its students who read for the LL.B Honours degree at RIC. Mr. Milhan Ikram Mohamed through his superb performance, obtained a First Class Honours in the LL.B degree during the 2009/2010 academic year which undoubtedly, is an extremely rare feat.

The automated library has an extensive collection of text books in all fields of study, supplementary books and also other reading material recommended by the University of London for various programmes that are offered. Additionally students are provided on-line access to the University of London Library as well as the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) of the University's portal to enable them to access many resources and external sites.

The highly qualified and experienced lecturers at RIC not only deliver the programmes effectively but also are very enthusiastic about student progress and provide help, care and proper guidance relating to problems the young students encounter in their lives as well as in studies.

"In keeping with its mission Royal Institute of Colombo produces graduates and other higher qualification holders in the field of social sciences with international competence in academic knowledge, soft skills and positive attitudes and it proposes to go further with its plan to introduce MBA and other postgraduate programmes relevant to the realities of the workplace from reputed foreign universities" stated Mr. G.T. Bandara, Chairman and Managing Director of Royal Institute of Colombo.
