Thomian ‘Maestoso 2011’ at the Wendt

Ones again the Chamber Orchestra of S. Thomas’ College (COSTC), Mount Lavinia will presents the popular ‘Maestoso 2011’, the Orchestral Ensemble performances on Friday, 29 April at the Lionel Wendt Theatre from 7.30pm onwards

This will be the second performance of the Thomian Chamber Orchestra after 2009. The very first independent performance in 2009 called ‘Maestoso’ and their first ever performance was at the orchestral show called ‘Fiesta’ in 2007, which was a combined orchestral show with Bishop’s College and Ladies College.

‘Maestoso 2011’ will feature orchestras of Ladies’ College, Colombo, Bishop’s College, Colombo and the Western Band of S. Thomas’ College, After two years of hard work, this will be the first appearance of the Chamber Orchestra.

Thirty five students from grade 6 to grade 14 of the S. Thomas’ College will come together in performing at this magical event. ‘The main idea behind this event is to expose and to encourage the students to orchestral performing and as well as to make a more enthusiastic audience. We all know nowadays some children have never seen a live orchestral performance or don’t even know what orchestral performance is all about’ said Manilal Weerakoon, the trainer of the Thomian Chamber Orchestra.

The event ‘Maestso 2011’ is going to cover music from the Classical era to the current trends in music. Apart fro COSTC, the orchestras from Ladies and Bishops will have a wide range of repertoire from Classics to current. The COSTC will too have their special variety of performances including few of the hits from the old classical of 40’s and 50’s to modern trends in music.

‘This is going to be performances, which can be enjoyed by any one from any age group as the show will cover many kinds of music eras. This year the Orchestra’s number of instruments are been broadened, specially the wind instrument section. The students have been practicing for this event since last year’ said Mr. Weerakoon.

The trainers of the S. Thomas’ college Mount Lavinia Orchestra are Manilal Weerakoon and Dayananda Fernando, who are doing a great job training the students and encouraging them for broader horizons.
‘They have been really supportive towards this project and help the committee members with the arrangements of this event with the master in charge Asanka Perera’ said Danushka Arttygala, the man behind the project.

The committee members for this event comprises Yuwin Jayanpathi - the President, Anuhan Jayakody - the Secretary, Danushka Arttygala - the treasurer and Sudarshan Samarasinghe - Assistant Secretary
The Tickets for the ‘Maestoso 2011’ are priced Rs. 1000/-, 500/-, and 350/- for balcony and are available at the O.B.A Office and will be available at the gate.
