Earthquake, tsunami and nuclear disaster in Japan

From an overseas member in Japan
By Ranaba Godakumbura (14 years), Yamato Junior High School, Japan

Earthquakes are natural disasters which could happen anywhere around the world. The fault lines which cause moving of the plates in the earth is what makes earthquakes happen. At 14:46:23 March 11, 2011, Japan was affected by a big earthquake and a deadly tsunami. Fukushima, Sendai and Tokyo areas were mainly affected by the earthquake. Sendai was hit by the biggest and worst tsunami that this country has ever been hit by.

It was said that the magnitude of the earthquake was 9.0 and the tsunami was about 10 – 14 metres high. It was said that about 10,100 were dead and 2777 were injured and 17,000 were missing by today.
Because of the earthquake a nuclear power plant in Fukushima was also destroyed. It is spreading radioactive matter which is harmful for humans as well as animals. It is still dangerous around Fukushima and near the power plant.

The government of Japan and the Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) are still trying to minimize the damage. Every day they are pumping water from helicopters and fire trucks to the nuclear reactors to cool them down.

I think that nuclear power plants and all other nuclear buildings should be removed from the earth and we should use environment friendly methods for power generation.

Value of newspapers

By Indunil Rupasinghe (Year 12), Ferguson High School, Ratnapura

Newspaper is regarded as the cheapest means to get all important local and foreign news. It is one of the media of communication. Newspapers bring us first hand news not only of Sri Lanka but also the other countries in the world.

Some newspapers are published weekly. Others are published daily. Newspapers are published in three languages, English, Sinhala and Tamil. The Sinhala dailies are Dinamina, Divaina, Lakbima and Lankadeepa. Daily News, Daily Mirror and the Island are daily English newspapers. Thinakaran, Dinapati and Weerakesari are the Tamil dailies.

We can read local news, foreign news, sports diary, obituaries, employment advertisements, articles and classifieds in a newspaper. Also the very important feature of a newspaper is its editorial.
We know it plays an important role in the society. It voices the public opinion. It has become so popular among people in all walks of life, because a newspaper educates the people. So I think it is indispensable to the modern man and his community.

Sea turtles

By Mohammed Akram (8 years), Good Hope Int. School

Turtles live in the sea. They can live both on land and sea. They have a shell to protect their body.
They walk slowly on land but they can move faster in the sea. At night they come to the seashore to lay eggs. They bury their eggs in the sand. After some days, the young ones come out of the eggs and swim to the deep sea.

Autobiography of a pencil

By Arshad Kamal (10 years), Minhal Int. Boys’ School

I am a pencil. I was made in a factory in Japan. The things needed to make me are wood, graphite and
rubber. They made me for one week. I was made beautifully. They named me as Natraj HB.

I was packed with 11 friends in a box to be exported to another country. I was there in the ship for three days happily with my friends. Also I was a bit sad because I thought that I would be bought by somebody.
As I landed in the harbour an old man bought our box. I was taken to his shop which was named Midland Bookshop. He kept all of us on a shelf.

One day a boy came to buy a pencil. As he looked at the shelf, I was shining, so he bought me for Rs. 10.
He took me to his school. He took me for his art work. He looked after me very carefully. One day one of his friends stole me and he did not care about me. He threw me into the dustbin. I am so lonely and dirty in the dustbin.

By Kavya Ekanayake (Grade 5), Mahamaya B. V., Kandy

I have a pet. It is a parrot. It has yellow, green and blue feathers. It has a red curved beak. My brother brought a cage and we put my parrot into it. Oh! What a sin! It creaks, screams, and what a loud noise it makes! I was sad but I love to keep it in my place. I don’t like to send it to the forest.

Oh! My peththappu, I taught him to talk with me. Now he is a great friend. He always calls me “Kavi, Kavi, oya bath kewada?” Yes, he is like a great friend to me.
