Global apparel, footwear brands to hit Colombo

International apparel brands are set to hit the Sri Lankan market within the next few months – courtesy the Softlogic Group which has come a long way since setting up an IT unit. The arrival of top brands in the country in apparel retail will add a totally new experience to the shopping culture of locals, Softlogic Managing Director Ashok Pathirage told the Business Times.

This is set to become part of Mr Pathirage’s increased diversification plans having already ventured into IT, healthcare and leisure. Initially the company plans to introduce Mango, Nike and Giordano brands to the local market that will create an interest in a a new range of fashions with five more brands to be added, he said.

Nike will be brought in this month while in June the other two brands will be introduced taking place within a period of 3-4 months, Mr Pathirage said. Nike headquartered near Beaverton, Oregon, a suburb of Portland currently operates in more than 160 countries around the globe with an employee base of over 30, 000 across six continents.

This is set to add to the whole living experience and with prospects of luring the discerning travelers to do some quality shopping while visiting the country, he said. Strategically locating the new shopping spaces on Galle road for Nike and Mango and another female brand at the former Fairline building while Giordano will attract the mass market on Duplication road.

Giordano, International Limited is a Hong Kong retailer of men's, women's and children's quality apparel operating in over 2000 stores worldwide in 30 countries. The company is Asia-Pacific's most successful retailer and sells its name under the brands of "Giordano", "Giordano Concepts", "Giordano Junior" and "Giordano Ladies". Mango is an internationally famous multinational, which designs, manufactures and markets women’s and men’s clothing and accessories. The brand is located in 100 countries worldwide with a total of 1,700 stores.
