IPU seeks observer status

Fonseka cases

Contrary to claims by the government, the Inter Parliamentary Union (IUP) has not only carried out a “confidential” probe into the case of former Army Commander Sarath Fonseka but has also come out with a “confidential report”.

During its sessions in Geneva from January 17 to 20, the IPU adopted a six-page report on the issue.
Among other matters, the IPU has called for an observer to be sent to follow the judicial proceedings in cases against the former General. The IPU has said it “remains concerned at Mr. Fonseka’s conditions of detention, given the contradictory information provided in this respect, and requests the Secretary General (of the IPU) to seek authorisation from the authorities for the trial observer to pay a visit to Mr. Fonseka.”

The IPU began probing Mr. Fonseka’s case after representations were made by United National Party parliamentarian Jayalath Jayawardena. The IPU has resolved that it “decides to continue examining this case” at its next session, to be held during the 124th assembly next month.
