Christmas

By Sachini Illangakoon (14 years) Thakshila College, Gampaha

We made a huge Christmas tree. We decorated it with ornaments, bulbs, and shining things and a star on the top of the tree. Mom made a lot of sweets.

I woke up early in the morning. I ran to the Christmas tree to see my presents Santa brought last night. I found a puppy which whined. I wonder how he knew it. And I didn’t forget to send a thanking letter to him with Dad!

My School Emblem

By Ian Perera (Grade 7) St. Anthony’s College, Kandy

My school is St. Anthony’s College, Kandy. In the centre of the Emblem of my school, there is an open Bible. Also, there are three mountains with two flowers and a shepherd’s rod on them. There is a cloud on one side. Rays of light come from it towards the Bible.

There is a scroll which says ‘Lux De Coelo’ in Latin. It means ‘Light From Heaven’. We wear our school badge with the emblem on it. It’s of three colours, maroon, dark blue and light blue.

My home garden

By Mohammed Amjath (Grade 5), Lexicon Int. School, Kurunegala

My home garden is very neat and tidy. There is a fence around it. I have grown vegetables, fruits as well as flowers there. The vegetables are grown in one side of the garden. Some of them are brinjal, onion,
potatoes, raddish, pumpkin, sweet potatoes and beet. In addition there are banana, mango, rambutan, guava, papaya and rose apple and jak.

My mother is interested in planting different flowers. So she has grown roses, sunflower, marigold, anthurium, jasmine and orchids. So when someone comes to my garden they admire it very much. So I am happy to see my home garden everyday. As well as the singing of birds and smells of
different flowers, shining of the bright sun add a beauty to my garden. I feel that I am in a paradise when I see my home garden.

Sigiriya

By Samindya Bandara, St. Joseph’s B.M.V., Kegalle

Sigiriya is a huge rock. It is an ancient kingdom. It is at Matale district. It is a rock fortress. King Kashyapa made his kingdom on the top of Sigiriya, because he wanted to become the king. So he killed his father King Datusena. Then he ran to the huge rock called Sigiriya to protect himself from his brother Moggallana and other enemies. Then he built a palace on the top of the rock.

King Kashyapa was very artistic. So he made his palace very creatively. He created a beautiful landscape garden on the rock. There were pleasure ponds on the rock. He painted beautiful frescoes on the rock. There is a mirror wall on the rock and there are verses on the mirror wall. To protect from enemies he made a large moat. Now there are only ruins of that moat and the palace.

It is a fascinating place to visit. I like Sigiriya because of the plumbing system. The climb to the rock is very exciting and thrilling. Sigiriya shows the ancient glory of our country.

What I want to be when I grow up

By Kajaruban Thananjayan (6 years), St. John Bosco, Jaffna

I am six years old. I want to be a pilot one day. When I was three years, used to travel with my father
from Colombo to Jaffna frequently. While travelling, my father used to seat me at the corner seat. He used to show me while taking off how the wheels are pulled in. I always admire the dress of the pilots and their cap.

Everyday I’m admiring the birds taking off flying like planes. Like birds I also will fly daily when I grow up and become a pilot.
