Ethen’s attempt at mercy killing

Latest Bollywod movie starring Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai ‘Guzaarish’, a story of a quadriplegic, wheelchair-using patient who attempts to takes to euthanasia and his intimate bond with his nurse, is now being screened at the Liberty cinema, Colombo.

Playing Ethan (Hrithik) who is suffering from impairments of the motor and sensory functions of his limbs and the married nurse played by Aishwarya Rai, the film is directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali.

The movie will revolve around the story of a married nurse (Aishwarya Rai) and a quadriplegic, wheelchair-using patient Ethan (Hrithik Roshan), suffering from impairments of the motor and sensory functions of his limbs, with whom she develops an intimate bond.

Set in Goa, home to one of the most accomplished magicians of the time - Ethan Mascarenhas. As fate would have had it, Ethan is severely injured when one of his magical trick goes wrong turning him to a paraplegic. Confined in his own wheel chair Ethan’s will power only goes stronger and stronger. He becomes the Radio Jockey of an FM Station called Radio Zindagi.

His show spreads magic and hope and laughter through his irrepressible wit and humor to every listener and caller, that it is difficult to imagine that this is a man who has been immobilised with a spinal injury for the last fourteen years of his life. Sofia D’Souza (Aishwarya Rai) is his elegant nurse who has been accompanying him like a shadow for past twelve years. Ethan’s life centers on Sofia and they share a silent tacit love which is both beautiful and spirited.

However, at the fourteenth anniversary of his accident, Ethan decides to take matters to his own hands and files an appeal to the court for mercy killing.This leaves Sofia in an impasse that challenges their relationship and their love.

Others in the cast include Shernaz Patel Nafisa Ali, Aditya Roy Kapoor, Monikangana Dutta, Suhel Seth and Rajit Kapoor.

‘Super Size Me’: Fast food epidemic

‘Super Size Me’, an American documentary film on hazardous fast food culture will be screened at 6 pm on Tuesday November 21 at the American Center, Galle Road, Colombo 3.

The film is based on an experience of independent filmmaker Morgan Spurlock who acted himself in the film which follows a 30-day period from February 1 to March 2, 2003 during which he eats only McDonald’s food. Under extensive medical supervision, Spurlock subjects himself to a steady diet of McDonald’s cuisine for 30 days just to see what happens. In less than a week, his ordinarily fit body and equilibrium undergo dark and ugly changes: Spurlock grows fat, his cholesterol rockets north, his organs take a beating, and he becomes subject to headaches, mood swings, symptoms of addiction, and lessened sexual energy.

Filmmaker Morgan Spurlock, rejected five times by the USC film school, won the best director award at the 2004 Sundance Film Festival for this alarmingly personal investigation into the health hazards wreaked by our fast food nation.

This weekend children movie at the American Center features ‘Ice Age’, American computer-animated film directed by Carlos Saldanha and Chris Wedge from a story by Michael J. Wilson. The story following three Paleolithical mammals attempting to return a lost human baby to its parents will be screened at 3.30 p.m. on November 27.

Captive at AF Colombo

French film a psychological thriller ‘La Captive’ (The Captive) directed by Chantal Akerman will be screened at 3 pm on Tuesday, November 23 and at 6.30 pm on Wednesday, November 24 at the Alliance Francaise Colombo 7.

Simon, a well-to-do young man, lives in an elegant Parisian apartment with his grandmother and girlfriend, Ariane. Simon’s intense love for Ariane causes him to have suspicions about her fidelity and he follows her around at a distance, believing that she is having a lesbian affair. In the end, convinced that Ariane is leading a sordid double life, Simon insists that they break off their relationship, an act which results in tragic consequences…

SIGNIS Salutation for cinema and small screen

SIGNIS Salutation to felicitate the talents in cinema and television for two years 2008 and 2009 will be held at the BMICH on November 26 at 6 pm.

34th SIGNIS Salutation which is popularly known as UNDA and OCIC awards organised by World Catholic Organisation for Communication will give away 13 awards each for 19 films in 2008 and 15 films screened in 2009 while another 13 awards will be awarded each for 11 teledramas in 2008 and 15 teledramas in 2009 telecast in various television channels.

For the year 2008 cinema Salutations films ‘Heart FM’, ‘Super Star’, ‘Hathara Denama Surayo’, ‘Siri Raja Siri’, ‘Adara Meena’, ‘Prabhakaran’, ‘Rosa kele’, ‘Wala patala’, ‘Ali Pencha mage Mithura’, ‘’Pita Sakwala Kumarayai Pencho Hathai’, ‘’Sandalu Thalen Eha’, ‘Aba’, ‘Sura Sepa Soya’, ‘Machan’, ‘Rosa Diganthe’,’ Ei Oba Thaniwela’, ‘Adaraye Namayen’ and ‘Nil Diya Yahana’ will be contested while cinematic works ‘Ali Surathal’, ‘Leader’, ‘Dancing Star’, ‘Sihina Dewduwa’, ‘Sir Last chance’, ‘Sinasuna Adaren’, ‘Rosa Mal Sayanaya’, ‘Paaya Enna Hiruse’, ‘Ekamath Eka Rateka’, ‘Julia’, ‘Akasa Kusum’, ‘Thusara’, ‘Bindu’, ‘Alimankada’ and ‘Kanyavi’ will contest for the year 2009.

The key note address of the festival will be delivered by veteran filmmaker and writer Professor Sunil Ariyaratne while a number of songs and dancing items are to be performed at the colourful night at BMICH.

“Our main aim in this event is to promote cinema and television as a medium of art and use it as a tool to upgrade human values,” says Rev. Fr. Benedict Joseph, National Director SIGNIS Sri Lanka.
“Even though this is organised by the Catholic Church, Salutation is conducted and awards are given independently without looking through religious perspective,” Fr. Joseph added.

Over the years majority of the jury members were from other religions, specially from Buddhist religious background and this is because we wanted to organise SIGNIS Salutation on far with a secular organisation, Fr. Joseph added.

Started as far back 1958 as OCIC Sri Lanka, the Salutation has immensely contributed to promote Sri Lankan cinema locally and internationally. Since 1970s OCIC was well-known for its service to promote Sri Lankan films in world renowned film festivals like Teheran Film Festival and Mannheim film festival in West Germany.

A tale of a bachelor

The telefilm ‘Maada Eyama Wiya’, a story of a man who decided to remain a bachelor following the tragic death of his lover, directed by Titus Ranasinghe will be telecast at 7.25 pm on Rupavahini starting from October 28.

The teledrama starring Sanath Wimalasiri, Dananjaya Siriwardena, Anuruddika Padukkage, Grace Ariyawimal, Wasantha Kumarasiri, Wijayaratne Warakagoda, Sarath Dikkumbura, Nanda Wickremage, Nelson Wimalasiri and children actors Naveena Shivangi, Esandhi Linara, Siluna Peiries and Dhanushi Fernando tells the story of Tissa Ekanayake an elderly bachelor who one day rescues a girl who is trying to commit suicide.

The protagonist Tissa Ekanayake, a retired Estate Superintendent had been in love with a parentless girl brought up in a convent. His parents oppose his affair at first but following the intervention of his uncle a Buddhist monk he manages to convince his parents to marry Sandamini. In an unfortunate sequence of events, few days prior to the wedding she is being abused by a drunkard and she commits suicide. Moved by this series of events Tissa decided to remain single and he is all alone in his ancestral home.

It was during one of his daily walks that he comes across Nayomi who tries to commit suicide. Tissa takes her home with the hope of finding her safe place as she refuses to get back to her home again.
But an expected story unravels when Nayomi sees the picture of Tissa’s girl friend Sandamini who committed suicide years ago.

Salt, a story of a CIA Spy

‘SALT’ a movie on a CIA agent goes on the run after a defector accuses her of being a Russian spy, is now being screened at the Regal cinema, Colombo for a limited engagement.

Playing the lead Angelina Jolie as Evelyn Salt, a CIA agent accused of being a double agent for the KGB, the film is directed by Phillip Noyce and written by Kurt Wimmer.

Evelyn Salt is a CIA agent and highly respected by all, including her boss, Ted Winter. Out of the blue, a Russian spy walks into their offices and offers a vital piece of information: the President of Russia will be assassinated during his forthcoming visit to New York City to attend the funeral of the recently deceased U.S. Vice President. The name of the assassin: Evelyn Salt.

Concerned about the safety of her husband, who she cannot contact, she goes on the run. Winter refuses to accept that she is a mole or a double agent but her actions begin to raise doubts. Just who is Evelyn Salt and what is she planning?
