If I had wings

From an overseas reader
By Tyara Jansz (9 years), St. Thomas More Primary School, UK

If I had wings,
I would fly up high,
And kiss the clouds as they floated by.
If I had wings,
I would zoom to the North Pole and rest on a polar bear,
its soft fur making me warm.
If I had wings,
I would twirl around space,
Smelling the scent of the stars as I pass by.
If I had wings,
I would gallop on a unicorn,
Through the deep pink evening sky.
If I had wings,
I would dream,
Becoming a dainty small butterfly.

Respect elders

By Nandakumar Jananaluckchala (Grade 9), Kotagala Tamil M.V.

Elders are very valuable persons. Their advice is very useful and important to us. We must listen to their advice and follow it. They never mislead us.

We must respect elders without differentiation such as rich and poor or fair and ugly. Whenever an elderly passenger stands without seats, we should not hesitate to offer them our seats.

If we are kind to them, they will greet and bless us. So we should not hurt their minds. We should never forget that one day even our parents and we too, become old and weak. So be kind and respect the elders and make them happy.

Our trip to Yala

By Tharusha Fernando (Primary 4), St. Nicholas Int. School, Negombo

Our trip was an exciting trip because we saw lots of animals. And we stayed in a bungalow inside the park. We saw six leopards altogether, a bear, some elephants and a lot of peacocks and deer.
It was very hard to spot the leopards because they usually don’t come out for people to see them. One of the leopards had killed a deer and taken it up on a palu tree. We searched for it the first day but it was nowhere to be seen.

We went there the next day early in the morning and we saw the leopard had eaten the whole deer and it was relaxing on the ground below the palu tree. My dad and I took a lot of photographs.

We were staying near the beach. So we had a sea bath. It was fun! It was gloomy all the time in Yala but the day we came home it was very sunny and hot.

Importance of healthy life

By Cheryl Jayakumar Good Shepherd Convent, Nuwara Eliya

If a machine is treated with care and properly maintained it is more likely to function effectively.
The human body too is like a machine only far more advanced. So similarly the human body is most likely to function to the best of its ability if it is kept fit and healthy.

We must be able to make the best use of our bodies in order to work hard. We are happy only when we enjoy good health. We have to eat a well balanced diet of nutrients, proteins, fat, carbohydrates and vitamins.

A healthy life keeps our hearts and lungs working properly. If we don’t have good health, we can’t study, play, eat, etc. Always we should remember that health is wealth and stay healthy if we want to enjoy a good life!

If I am an astronaut

By Sanduni Perera (13 years), Willesden College Int.

If I am an astronaut, I will definitely make a large spacecraft to go to the moon. I’ll name the spacecraft Astromission as which says about the mission of an astronaut. I’ll work in NASA (National Aeronautics
and Space Administration) and often find out about extraordinary creatures in other planets. My favourite part is to find out about the space galaxies, stars and light years between them to our Earth. I’ll make thousands of calculations and work hard on them.

I’ve heard of many sayings that if we can travel faster than light speed we can travel through time. If I am an astronaut, I’ll work on light speed and I’ll be the first to find out about everything. I’ll become a famous astronaut in the world. I’ll make different and modern substances.

I’ll keep on studying Astronomy. And also I’ll find new secrets about space with the help of satellites. I’ll discover a lot of planets and galaxies.

I know it’s not possible to become an astronaut easily and I also know that its’ not impossible if we work hard. So if I am an astronaut I’ll make all my dreams come true.
