Tonight’s the night for some choral greats

It’s not just choral music but a concert with a difference with a variety of acts, reveals Michael Sathasivam, Musical Director of Voice Print, the all-male acapella choir who will take the stage tonight at 7 p.m. at the Water’s Edge along with some of the leading stars of the local music scene.

‘Encore’ –will see the De Lanerolle Brothers, Natasha Rathnayake, Ricky Bahar, Mariazelle, Soul Sounds, Rukshan Mark, Krishan and the Choir of the Visual and Performing Arts Faculty all presenting different genres of music in a grand show that Voice Print hopes will be extra special- because they’re saying ‘thank you’.

It’s a show to say ‘thank you’ to all who have been with Voice Print and supported us on our journey,” says Michael. The ten-member choir, participating at the World Choir Games (WCG) 2010 in the Chinese city of Shaoxing, tasted international success when they won a silver medal in the Pop category and a bronze in the Gospel category. They will present their Choir Games hits and Michael makes special mention of their Gregorian Chant version of ‘Nearer My God to Thee’.

If you associate this song with funerals or the sinking of the Titanic in the film, we’ll have you thinking again,” he promises. Voice Print will be backed by The Rebels, more Old Benedictine talent.

But Voice Print aside, there will be lots for the audience to look out for, says Michael. Popular songstress Mariazelle will take the stage to sing a medley of her hits, acapella for the very first time, backed by Voice Print. It’s a special Barber shop arrangement by Dilan Irugalbandara says Michael. Ricky Bahar will perform a duet with his daughter Shyanne and Natasha will perform an acoustic version of her original 'Runway'. The De Lanerolle Brothers will be backed by Voice Print as they sing the thrilling “Impossible Dream’.

The Choir of the Visual and Performing Arts Faculty whom Voice Print heard performing recently impressed them so much that they received an invitation to join them on this big stage.

“We saw shades of ourselves in them, the way we used to be,” says Michael, happy to be giving this talented group the chance to sing with a galaxy of stars. They will sing their original ‘Hail Sri Lanka’ and the Sinhalese fusion 'Cradle Song' written by Norman Corea.

The grand finale will see all the performers on stage singing ‘I still haven’t found what I’m looking for’ – a fitting end to a concert featuring some of the best of Lanka’s contemporary choral talent.
