Young photographers exhibit their work

An exhibition of wildlife photographs taken by two budding young photographers, Ashvini Jayatilake (12) of Musaeus College and Dimitri Goonewardena (15) of Stafford International School will be on display at the Harold Peiris Gallery of the Lionel Wendt Art Centre on August 21 and 22.

Both Ashvini and Dimitri, protégés of the well known wildlife photographer, Chitral Jayatilake, have won prizes at several competitions, the former having been runner up in Sri Lanka’s Young Wildlife Photographer 2006 contest, in which she was given a special award for being the youngest prize-winner.

The photographs on display have been taken at many of Sri Lanka’s premier wildlife parks including Yala and Wilpattu, in addition to places as varied as coconut plantations, the wilds of Habarana and the lagoons of Jaffna.

Senior journalist launches book of poems

In the paraphrased words of the poet W. M. Thackery the code of ethics for journalists was:
Oh ye knights of pen,

Let honour be your shield and truth tip your lances:
Be the voice of the voiceless and the poor,
Be the voice of the child and the childlike,
Be gentle with them
But as for the ogre Humbug, out sword at him or her

Senior journalist Lynn Ockersz is widely seen as such a knight of the pen-selfless, sincere and sacrificial with a clear vision that essentially is an instrument through which the sovereign people exercise their fundamental rights to the freedom of expression and to be fully and properly informed.

'The Peace Thou Gives' is a collection of devotional poems written by Mr. Ockersz. It is his second book of poems giving his experience of inner spiritual liberation.

Mr. Ockersz is seen presenting the first copy of his book to the Archbishop of Colombo the Rt. Rev. Malcolm Ranjith.
