Black Box Short Play Festival

The ‘Black Box Short Play Festival’, drama, dance and film festival will be held from July 26 to August 3 at Inter Act Art Theatre House in Obeysekarapura, Rajagiriya. This eight-day festival provides international theatre experience to those art lovers at the Black box Theatre, an alternative theatre concept with limited 40 seats.

Having conducted their first festival earlier, this second attempt is aimed at proving an international theatre experience to the playwrights and theatre lovers, said festival organiser M. Safeer.

“Having gone to Germany to attend the European Drama Festival on a scholarship in 2008, I had the opportunity to attend to seminars, workshops and discussions about children and youth drama with the delegates of 36 countries. There, I saw a number of modern dramas, performed in small theatres, the model known as Black Box Theatre,” said Safeer describing his interest in promoting the culture of Black Box Theatre.

With the support of tha German Cultural Centre, Safeer later produced two plays based on this model and at present the concept is being shared with young theatre artistes throughout the country.
The festival includes two daily shows at 4 pm and 6 pm.

The programmes are: dance performances ‘Rhythm of Dance’ by Anne Gawry Malewana and ‘Ape Violenaya’ by Sudesh Manthilaka on July 27; short plays ‘Maddahana Sanda’ by Vasana Bandara and ‘Saki Sanda Saha Sara Sanda’ by Tharuka Pushpakumara on July 28, two short films ‘Dhowana’ by Nimal Weerasinghe and ‘Evidina Kurulla’ by Suneetha Thuduwage on July 29, short plays ‘Ithin Sir’ by Raj Wijesinghe and ‘Mihikatha Kageda’ by Piyathilake Ranaweera on July 30, dance performance ‘Chalana Ridma’ by Prakash Galgewela, short play ‘Man Vitharai’ by Samantha P. Liyanage and a mime by Prakash Galgewela on July 31, short plays ‘Promotion’ by Mohamed Hilmy and ‘Eya=Ohu’ (She =He) by Manoj Priyadarshana on August 1, short plays ‘Anthima Kailla Che’ by Dinesh Lasantha and Kumudini Wickremathanthri and Tamil short play ‘Eyath Tharuwak’ by S. Dayalan on August 2 on August 3 (final day) Nadeeka Tharangani’s play ‘Pompeeniya’.

No late entries will be permitted and the tickets are priced at Rs 100 and children below 10 are not allowed. The festival will be held at the Black Box Theatre, with 40-seats alternative theatre run by Inter Act Art at Nanayakkara Mawatha, Rajagiriya.
