Gallery Café rewarded on home ground

After several years of receiving accolades and media coverage abroad, Paradise Road, The Gallery Café is being recognized on home ground. The Gallery Cafe won the Presidential Award for Best Restaurant at the Travel & Tourism Awards 2009 organised by the Ministry of Economic Development of Sri Lanka and held at the BMICH on June 15.

The Gallery Café started business in November 1998 in what were the former offices of architectural legend Geoffrey Bawa.

The building was entrusted to Shanth Fernando, chairman of the Paradise Road group of companies as Bawa had the confidence that Fernando would maintain and promote his beloved building to full potential.

The 12-year success of The Gallery Café can be attributed to a reputation for consistency in maintaining a world class image. Some international famous faces to have dined at the restaurant are Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden, Sting, Donna Karan, Kenzo, David Tang and more recently, some of the IIFA celebrities.

The Gallery Café is also responsible for modernizing Sri Lankan cuisine for tourists who wish to sample local fare, while still making it an authentic and popular choice for locals, with dishes such as Gotukola Soup, Sri Lankan Fish Head Curry Soup and Crab Curry Soup, Black Pork Curry, Prawn Curry and desserts like Jaggery Crème Brulee and Jaggery Sundae which have stayed on the menu from its inception.
