The multi-million rupee flyover at Dehiwala Junction that was constructed to streamline the traffic flow on Galle Road at this spot has led to several snags with both officials and the police conceding that changes were urgently needed.

Road Development Authority (RDA) Director General R.W.R. Premasiri said there was an increase of accidents at the spots where the traffic in the lanes on either side of the flyover merged with the traffic using the flyover.

Deadly spots: Past few weeks have seen an increase of accidents where the traffic in the lanes on either side of the flyover merged with the traffic using the flyover.

He said the bulk of the accidents took place at night at these spots which were not wide enough to accommodate the traffic. His concerns were endorsed by Police Traffic Sub Inspector (SI) Chandrasiri Medagoda who claimed that between eight to ten accidents occurred at these spots each month.

He added however that the problem could be minimized once the marine drive reaches Dehiwala, but nonetheless insisted that some changes will have to be made soon.

Three-wheeler driver Susantha Fonseka summed it up in this manner. “The flyover was the perfect solution to ease the traffic flow on one hand but then this junction has become notorious for accidents and the authorities must get their act together before the situation worsens.”
