Tall order for Sri Lanka Hockey Team in Dhaka

Asian Games Qualifying tournament

The Sri Lanka Men’s National Hockey team led by K.S.S. Perera will no doubt face stiff opposition from hosts Bangladesh, Singapore, Thailand, Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong and Oman at the Asian Games Qualifying Hockey Tournament in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

The Sri Lanka team was deprived of a possible Bronze at the South Asian Federation (SAF) Games mainly due to some umpiring errors against Bangladesh, who had been a vastly improved side due to the presence of German coaches. A lot is expected from the Sri Lanka team at the Qualifying competition.

The team took wing to Chennai on Friday to play a series of matches there. From Chennai they will proceed to Dhaka, Bangladesh to participate in the Asian Games Qualifying Tournament 2010 which is to be held from May 7 to 16.

In Chennai, (India) the team will undergo further training and will take part in a few practice matches in Tamil Nadu against leading teams after which they will proceed to Dhaka on May 3. In preparation for the

competition the team underwent intense training at the Nandamithra Ekanayake Stadium in Matale. Due to budgetary constraints and also since it has become necessary to play few practice matches with strong and leading teams prior to the tournament, they left to Chennai, India and after training and playing few matches in Chennai they will proceed by land to Dhaka, Bangladesh to participate in the Asian Games Qualifying Tournament.

The following players and officials will represent Sri Lanka. The players: Thusith Darshana Ratnasiri, Randika Crishmal Fernando, I.K.Jayasundara , N.D.B.Dissnayake, Anura Bandara Karunarathna, M.G.H.P. Dharmarathna, K.S.S.Perera (Capt, Diluka M. Weerasooriya(Vice Capt), M.M.Gazzaly, Nuwan Anju Hewage, T.M.S.D.Abeyrathne, M.M.Mulafer, M.G.Sanjeewa, H.S.Hettiarachchi, D.T.Panditharatne, D.M.S.B.Wijekoon, L.G.Weerasooriya and W.I.U.F.Danushka

The Officials who accompanied the Team are: P. Vishvanathan (Chef de Mission), Asoka Hapuarachchi (Manager), B.G.R. Fernando (Manager), S.M. Mulafer (Coach), Leelananda Ittapana (Asst. Coach), G.S. Kapukotuwa (Official),Indika Jayawardena (Umpire), M.M.C. H. Bandara (Trainer) and M.F. Laheer (Judge).
