Kingswood in unimpressive 23-10 win over S. Anthony’s

By Aubrey Kuruppu

Kingswood had an impressive first outing beating St. Anthony’s by 23 points (4 tries and a penalty) to10 (1 penalty, 1 goal) at Nittawela.

The Antonians had more possession but could not make much headway in the first half as fly half Chamara Kumara was caught in possession a few times.

Kingswood’s back division handled the ball well and threatened almost every time they set the line in motion. Skipper Rajith Sansoni joined the line in the 16th minute, shrugged off two tackles and scored.
This was after Chamara Kumara and Sansoni had traded early penalties. The winners led 8-3 at lemons.

Scrum half Mohammed Abzal scored twice in the second half showing good side-stepping and dummying skills. The last try was scored by flanker Chetiya Wadugodapitiya. Surprisingly Sansoni missed four conversions.

The Antonians reduced the deficit with a second half try by lock Mohammed Laheer. It was converted by Chamara Kumara.

All the junior matches were called off due to heavy rain in the afternoon. Sadly the ground authorities took a long time to carry out the markings. As a result, the game got underway at 5.10 and was stopped by referee Aruna Rankothge with eight minutes left. The latter part of the second half was played in semi-darkness.
