Sri Lanka Tourism gets boost through IIFA

After a decade with celebrations across the world, the International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) will celebrate the IIFA Weekend and IIFA Awards in Sri Lanka, this year. The 11th edition of IIFA will be held in Colombo, from 3 to 5 June at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium.

As always, the IIFA Weekend, Sri Lanka will be a culmination of mega events that brings Indian cinema to the world. The IIFA Weekend includes the high-profile FICCI IIFA Global Business Forum, the IIFA Foundation Fashion Extravaganza, the IIFA Foundation Celebrity Cricket Match, World premieres of Indian films, IIFA Film Workshop and the climax of the Weekend, the spectacular IIFA Awards. The IIFA Awards is the biggest South Asian media event and is considered among the most-watched annual global events.

Veteran actor Amithab Bachchan was in Sri Lanka last week as the Brand Ambassador of IIFA to finalize the event details and to brief media on the event. It is reported that South Africa, the United Arab Emirates, Australia and South Korea, were the other strong contenders for the venue.

Sri Lanka Tourism Authority along with Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau and Sri Lankan Airlines made possible this event to be held in Colombo. ‘We are very proud to bring the IIFA magic to Colombo as the host of this magnificent event’ said Dileep Mudadeniya, Managing Director, Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau, “We are grateful to IIFA and Wizcraft for choosing our country as the host nation and look forward to a Weekend of glamour, cinema and networking.

We look to give the IIFA Weekend and Awards our utmost support. The Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau looks forward to hosting the Indian Film Fraternity and a large faction of tourists and fans alike, to Sri Lanka’ he added IIFA Colombo 2010 is expected to be attended by more than 600 Indian film industry guests and watched by 600 million TV viewers in 110 nations.

Celebrities expected to attend include famous Indian acting dynasty the Bachchans - father Amitabh, son Abhishek and his wife, former Miss World Aishwarya Rai, Sha Rukh Khan, Kajol and other popular Indian stars.

Also present at the press briefing were Governor of the Central Bank Ajith Nivard Cabraal, former Tourism Minister Achala Jagoda, Secretary of Tourism Ministry George Michael, CEO of SriLankan Airlines Manoj Gunawardena and former Miss Sri Lanka and Bollywood actress Jacqueline Fernandez.
