Funday Times - A Poem for the week

City Scene
By Roshani Tennakoon (12 years), Mahamaya Girls' College, Kandy

Slums and shanties all in a row,
Pavements and vehicles only in show,
Fumes and chemicals spreading in air,
Some go in cars; that's not fair.

Lights and police on our way,
Beside the road the buildings lay.
Shops and markets busy all the day,
But the temple and church are calm for every prayer.

Pavements filled with hawkers and sellers,
Leaving a little space for poor people,
Traffic jams due to VIP yellers,
Who do not care about things illegal.

Garbage and dust fill every street,
They always dirty our meat and feet.
Rain spills drains into polluted streams,
This is our typical city scene.
