Star-class meal for top brass, lunch parcels for Ranaviru heroes

By Shane Seneviratne, Kandy correspondent

At today’s Police Ranaviru celebrations in Kandy, the families of senior police officers will be served meals made at star-class hotels, while the families of the war heroes being feted will have to be satisfied with food parcels made at smaller hotels and eateries.

The annual event to honour police heroes was introduced four years ago by former Central Province DIG, Nimal Mediwaka, who also established the Central Province Police Ranaviru Society. In previous years, the Police Ranaviru Society organised the event, and provided meals for some 500 Police family members attending the event.

This year, the event is being organised by the Police Department’s Buddhist Society. Every month, Rs. 10 is deducted from a police officer’s salary as a mandatory contribution to the Buddhist Society.
This year the contributions are being used to pay for the meals served at today’s special Police event.
