Croc info needed

Do you have any information about crocodiles on sightings or even attacks? If you do, please contact Anslem de Silva, Regional Vice Chairman for South Asia and Iran of the Crocodile Specialists Group (IUCN/SSC), who is conducting the first island-wide survey on these reptiles. He has already combed many parts of the country, from Matara to the north for crocodiles.

Last year, Anslem along with a team from the Department of Wildlife at Yala, comprising D.M.N.P.K. Dawundasekara, Romulus Whitaker, W.A.A.D.U. Indrajith and H.K. Susantha completed the preliminary study of crocodiles in Yala Block 1. The study results were published in the Crocodile Specialists Group (IUCN/SSC) Journal Vol. 28 No 4, 2009. According to de Silva, "Yala Block 1 has one of the best wild populations of the mugger or marsh crocodile (hela kimbula) in the world.”

Anslem has also personally investigated nearly 300 cases of human-crocodile conflict cases in many parts of the island.

Any information on such crocodile attack incidents, old or new, on humans, cattle, dogs etc. could be sent to Anslem de Silva, 15/1 Dolosbage Road, Gampola or call 071-274 84 11 or 081-2350-998.
