Kandy mayor sacked; Governor shocked

By Shane Seneviratne

Kandy Mayor L. B. Aluwihare has been sacked without any explanation and Deputy Mayor Suminda Wickremasinghe who recently crossed over to the UPFA has been appointed as the Mayor.

L. B. Aluwihare

Mr Aluwihare told the Sunday Times he would file a case in courts tomorrow, challenging his dismissal. He said he was not officially informed of the dismissal and as he was filing a case there would be no reason to vacate his official residence or hand over his official vehicle.

Meanwhile, Mr. Wickremasinghe said he would assume duties as mayor tomorrow. He said he received the gazette notification appointing him as the Mayor of Kandy and also a letter to that effect from the Commissioner of Local Government.

Complicating the conflict, Central Province Governor Tikiri Kobbekaduwa expressed disappointment over the sudden dismissal of Mr. Aluwihare and said that even he was not informed of such a move. He said that he was not aware of any reasons for the dismissal.

“The Chief Minister should have had the courtesy to inform the governor when important decisions are taken,” Mr. Kobbekaduwa said.
