Royal Institute of Colombo: The leader in tertiary education

Royal Institute of Colombo (RIC) needs no introduction when it comes to University of London Degrees and Diplomas. Playing a pioneering role in extending university education in degree and diploma courses from the University of London, Royal Institute of Colombo has enabled students to read for these degrees and diplomas in Colombo for the last 13 years.

Over the years, RIC has produced globally competitive graduates who perform exceptionally well in national and international job markets as well as in postgraduate studies in national and international universities.

In recognition of the level of commitment and support provided in delivering University of London study programmes, Royal Institute of Colombo has now been awarded the status of Affiliate Centre.

With loads of experience in the field and more expertise than most of the other institutes that offer similar courses Royal Institute of Colombo has now opened new doors for the Sri Lankan students with its new status with the University of London and London School of Economics to read for their degrees from the comfort of their homes. Over the years we have built and started on the teaching of many Degrees in many different areas such as Accounting, Banking, Business, Development, Economics, Finance, Information Systems, Law, Management, Mathematics and Sociology.

Considering the very few choices available to a large number of students who drop out of the Secondary education system after GCE A/Levels, but who wish to eventually to pursue a degree programme, Royal Institute of Colombo has just introduced a Pre- Degree Foundation Course which allows them to undergo an intensive learning process. While it would be considered as a preferred entry qualification for admission to the Degree Programme of the University of London, it would also make it easier for them to follow BSc or LLB Degrees and achieve excellent results.

There are many unique advantages in taking Degree and Diploma programmes offerd by Royal Institute of Colombo which are kept up-to-date with what is being taught in the London University and also they are constantly being monitored by the London University academic staff to make sure that the programmes are up to the right standards they have set. The examination papers are set and corrected by the University of London while the examination itself is conducted by the British Council.

The Academic Staff of RIC, who comprise of both permanent and visiting lecturers, have been picked after assuring that they are up to the job at hand. The permanent staff consists of Senior Lecturers, Lecturers and Assistant Lecturers. The lecturing panel has been carefully picked and selected from the best in the country and the senior lecturing panel includes lecturers who have qualifications at Master's and/or PhD levels in their respective fields.

The teaching methodology at RIC includes lectures and also interactive and self learning. Students in Diploma classes receive more time for tutorial and discussion classes whereas in general one third of the contact hours in each class is allocated for discussion and tutorial classes. Students are encouraged to have one-to-one discussions with the lecturers so that all their subject matters are covered and cleared.

The RIC Library, which is fully furnished and automated features an extensive collection of books in various fields of study, most of which are hard to locate locally and also CDs covering the essential textbooks, supplementary books and other reading material recommended by the University of London for the various programmes that are offered. In addition, students also have access to the on-line databases and encyclopedias, provided on request. Students reading for the Degrees and Diplomas of the University of London are provided with online access to the University of London library as well.
With a qualified and dedicated staff and superior study facilities RIC has consistently produced excellent results. For the last six years, RIC's final results pass rate has been above 96 percent. Raising the bar in levels of excellence, the pass rate reached an impressive 99 percent last year.

For those who want to become Attorneys-at-Law, the best path to follow is RIC's LLB programme. Most of RIC's LLB graduates sit the Barristers Examination in London and also sit the Law College finals in Sri Lanka, which enables them to become Attorneys-at-Law without having to enter Law College. The Law College entrance examination in Sri Lanka is highly competitive. Around 15,000 people sit the examination but only 250 are chosen. Those who read for the University of London LLB degree do not have to go through this process.

Students can join the Degree programme after the Advanced Level examinations and complete it within two years and 10 months and earn a prestigious and internationally recognized Degree from the University of London.
