The Pre-degree programme of the South Asian Institute of Technology and Management (SAITM) - Business Plan

1. The SAITM's unique pre-degree programme

The SAITM pre-degree programme is not a foundation programme to prepare students for a degree programme. The pre-degree is a personality development programme for the very young, where the student would become a self reliant assertive young person endowed with excellent communicational skills.

The transformation a student achieves through the pre-degree would make him mature enough to study for a degree programme. The pre-degree programme offered by the SAITM is unique in that the programme focuses on soft skills that are in great demand from a future professional.

Personality, leadership, assertiveness, self reliance, and effective communication skills are the prime skills a professional of the future should posses. This is a one year programme.

The initial phase of the programme is dedicated to develop self reliance, and assertiveness of the student and extends this phase to build team work and communication skills, two primary and dire skills the future executive needs. The objective of the first or initial phase of the SAITM pre-degree programme is to give a super personality profile to the students conducive for making creative decisions.

The SAITM pre-degree would help one to become a creative judge of one's life and environment, plan the life using his or her assertive nature, and a social being whose thoughts, words, and deeds are directed towards benefiting the society in which he or she lives.

What the candidates will learn in the first phase of four months Students will learn in the first phase, extending to Four months, the following concepts and skills:

1. Human potential, the untapped inner energy, and human values
2. Man and his environment; the co-existence of the individual and his environment
3. Assertive, aggressive, and passive characters of humans; developing assertiveness
4. Groups and teams, forming and developing teams
5. Business communications - Part I
6. Mathematics and decision skills
Students will then move into the more profession specific areas of study such as Management, Entrepreneurship, Decision models, and International Business. Specific subjects are:
1. Organizations and organizational behavior
2. Business opportunity analysis
3. Forecasting and planning
4. Business communications - Part II
5. Functional management: production and operations, marketing, financial management, marketing management, human capital in organizations
6. Application of quantitative techniques
7. International business
8. Entrepreneurship and setting up a business venture
9. Field project

2 For whom is the SAITM pre-degree program?

The SAITM pre-degree programme is for the young and teens who aspire to achieve internationally recognized academic or professional qualification. A student who is over 16 years of age with GCE (OL) may study in this programme which will pave the way for a university degree or a world recognized professional qualifications.

A second category is the advance level students who do not have an adequate standing to register for higher education. This category of students will find the pre-degree a fast track to win a degree.

3. Academic and professional paths:

Successful completion of the pre-degree programme will enable you to select the most appropriate academic or professional path. SAITM is confident that the institute can introduce many more international qualifications. The institute has ambitious plans to collaborate with British, US, South African, and Indian universities.

i. Academic path - Once you complete the pre-degree, you will be able to gain admission to a British Degree programme of three to four year duration

ii. Professional path - Completion of the pre-degree will enable you to begin the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants(ACCA) programme or the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) programme, both of which are internationally recognized professional programmes.
iii. Some paths allow you to acquire both academic and professional qualifications simultaneously.

3. Admission procedure

If you have passed GCE(OL) and are above 16 yrs of age, then you are eligible to apply for this program. Admission will be through an entrance test and an interview.

4. Fee structure

The total fee, for the whole one year program is Rs 84000. You may pay fees in four installments.
For those candidates who will proceed to bachelors or postgraduate degree programs on successful completion of the pre-degree program are entitled to a very concessionary loan scheme from Bank of Ceylon. SAITM can assist you in getting a loan, up to 75% of the program fee with a grace period equivalent to the duration of program. Parents of the students will be the co-borrowers of the loan.
