Funday Times - A Poem for the week

The steadfast sailor
By Dilshan Senaratne (14 years), Ecole Internationale, Digana

Standing alone on deck, like a lean and erect mast,
Watching the grey, heaving sea
Making his last prayer to God
"Oh return me home safely".

Clad in a jacket that had long seen better times,
The steadfast young sailor,
Working devotedly in his entire youth
Now has no-one to confide in his secret fears.

A seagull screeches, its voice far out from shore,
And utters a final sound as it knows it's near deaths door,
Its lifeless body plunges into the yawning sea,
But still the young sailor says,
"Oh return me home safely"…

A sight of land – oh joy finally,
He has come home… safely
