Remembering three iconic European classical masters

The German Cultural Centre, in collaboration with the Chamber Music Society of Colombo will pay tribute to three famous German composers – Handel, Haydn and Mendelssohn, in a commemorative Hauskonzert to be held on August 20 at the Goethe Institut, Hall, 39, Gregory’s Road, Colombo 7, on Thursday, August 20 at 7.15 p.m.

The Concert will be repeated in Galle at the Dutch Reformed Church on Saturday, August 22 at 6 p.m.

This year coincidentally marks the anniversaries of all three –the 250th death anniversary of George Friedrich Handel (1685 – 1759), 200th death anniversary of Franz Joseph Haydn (1732 – 1809) and 200th birth anniversary of Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy (1809 – 1847).

The composers are icons of European classical music. Their oratorios, chamber music, symphonies and concertos epitomize vital links in Europe’s cultural heritage. Around the world this year their legacy to posterity is being celebrated.

The programme for the Hauskonzert at the Goethe Institut Hall will include: Concerti Grossi Op. 6 no 1 by G.F. Handel, Concertini for Piano, 2 Violins and Cello by Joseph Haydn and String Symphony no 1 by Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy.

The Chamber Music Society of Colombo performs under the direction of its Artistic Director, Lakshman Joseph de Saram. The programme will be moderated by Dr. Asoka de Zoysa from the University of Kelaniya.
