Alleged baby thieves nabbed; police looking for parents

By Pradeep Fernando

Chilaw police are searching for the parents of an 18-month-old baby following the arrest two men who allegedly tried to sell the infant for Rs. 50,000.

A female constable carrying the baby

Chilaw Inspector P. Maldeniya said policemen on patrol on the Chilaw-Kurunegala Road arrested the two men after they noticed they were having an argument between them.

He said the baby was weak and therefore in need of medical care. He said the police had still not located the parents of the baby though the two suspects had claimed that the baby belonged to a woman being treated in a Chilaw hospital.

Investigations have shown that there was no such woman in the hospital. Inspector Maldeniya said the baby was being looked after by women constables and the suspects would be produced in courts tomorrow.

In another case in Galle, a mother who tried to sell her child for Rs. 10,000 was arrested along with four other suspects by the police.
