The battle of the two princes
This article is part of a continuing series on the ‘Mahavamsa,’ the recorded chronicle of Sri Lankan history

1. Prince Veediya Bandara received a letter from Princess Samudra Devi. It read as follows. "My dear Prince, Jaya Bandara visits me often. He even enters my chamber without my permission. He
professes his love to me. I'm tired of these frequent visits and silly conversations. Please do something soon to save me." After reading the contents of the letter, this valiant prince changed his mind. He became furious.

2. He got up from his seat. With his fists closed tight, he began to tremble in anger. He took his sword and left the palace. He mounted his horse and rode off towards Jaya Bandara's palace.

A little distance away from the entrance to the palace, he alighted from his horse and started walking towards the palace. Two of Jaya Bandara's security guards, who were guarding the entrance, noticed that Veediya Bandara was in no good mood.

3 They acted immediately. They blocked the entrance in such a way that the prince could not enter. This strong prince did not take any notice of the obstacle. He pushed them aside with both his hands.

Both fell down and were unable to get up at once. Prince Veediya Bandara who was fuming and frothing did not even care to see what happened to them. He quickened his step and entered Prince Jaya Bandara's palace.

4. When Jaya Bandara saw Veediya Bandara, his anger rose. "Why did you enter my palace by force?" he asked. Then Prince Veediya Bandara said, "You weakling, I am here to tell you how low you have been". When Jaya Bandara asked him what his low act was, Veediya Bandara told him that he was planning to get married to a princess who had no love for him.

5. Prince Jaya Bandara for a moment, watched in surprise. Veediya Bandara went on to say, "Tell me whether it is not a low act. Do you know that as a result of your actions, her life will come to an untimely end? You are a fool if you do not understand that much". After listening to all this, Prince Jaya Bandara flew into a rage and said, "You rascal, I know you are rough in all your actions. Shut your mouth now"

6. Veediya Bandara's anger grew. He was almost trembling. Then Prince Jaya Bandara said, "A timid and graceful princess like Samudra Devi is only suitable for a person like me and not for a rough and rude man like you". So saying, he drew his sword from the scabbard. Seeing this, Veediya Bandara too held his sword and asked him, whether he was ready for a fight.

7. "Yes. I shall cut you in two", said he and jumped towards Veediya Bandara, with his sword drawn. Veediya Bandara jumped back a few steps to dodge the blow of Jaya Bandara. He then aimed well and gave one blow to Jaya Bandara.

As Jaya Bandara too was well versed in martial arts, he avoided Veediya Bandara's blow.

8. A few minutes passed. Both princes had come out of the palace, fighting. The news of this battle spread like wildfire. Soon, a large crowd had gathered to witness this.

The two princes continued their fighting, quite unconcerned about the crowd that had gathered. The crowd was simply shocked. They just looked on helplessly.
